Why Is There Less Caffeine In A Cup Of Tea Than a Cup Of Coffee?

I find that I have to write this post because I have heard from two different people that tea has more caffeine than coffee.   This is both true and false.  Read on to find out why.

One of these people was a doctor.  She actually told me not to drink more than 2 cups of green tea per day because more than that would be too much caffeine.   Then she said it was ok to drink up to 3 cups of coffee per day!   I have to really shake my head on this.

She does not realize that 3 cups of coffee has a LOT more caffeine than 2 cups of tea.   And I find it strange that she had this misconception - particularly as she is a medical doctor.    I feel that it is not right if she is telling her patients this.

In addition,  black tea has more caffeine than green tea and white tea has the least amount of caffeine.

Look, here is the scoop.   There is FAR LESS caffeine in a cup of tea than a cup of coffee.

These people are confused because it is TRUE that POUND FOR POUND there is more caffeine in tea than in coffee.   What they fail to take into account is that you use a LOT LESS tea leaves than coffee to make a cup of either.

This is the reason why there is less caffeine in a cup of tea than a cup of coffee.

A cup of coffee has more caffeine than a cup of tea.
