Trying To Give Up Coffee - Like Me?

You bet I'm trying to give up coffee and I've gone about 1 1/2 weeks without it.    Looks like I motivated myself partially with this post on coffee.

The other part of the motivation came from an upcoming dental appointment.  I wanted to give my teeth a chance to heal any holes (beginning of cavities) that might have been brewing.

You don't want to give a dentist the excuse to drill and fill.  Some will not do so easily, but others will!  (That's a tip regarding how to find a good dentist -btw).

So, anyway, I must of had enough time to reverse any acid damage that had been occurring, because I didn't have any cavities on this recent trip.

I think a lot of that also has to do with the Hydro Floss which I use daily and does a lot to reduce the amount of plaque and tartar buildup between dental cleanings.

I know that coffee is a mainstream drink and some people drink it all day long.   For this reason, I suggest balancing your mouth pH after drinking every cup!

Dental health is elusive for a lot of people.  Acid helps cavities, bad breath and gum disease develop.

The strange aspect of this is that the 'bad' bacteria love acid.  It also ends up being a byproduct of their anaerobic metabolism.   That's a fancy way of saying their waste is acidic.   The bacteria that use aerobic metabolism are usually not harmful to our dental health.

Since increasing the acid levels (and decreasing) pH helps that bad bacteria multiply more rapidly, it follows that raising the pH would be something they would not like.

Not many mouthwashes are pH balanced but this one is.

Sincerely,

Clay Center Family Dental Care in Clay Center, Kansas Gives A Day Of Free Care!

I love stories like this one, found in wibw.com's website

This is great.   I really enjoy hearing about stories like this one.

Dr.  Rick Hammel, said that his eyes were opened while doing volunteer work in Belize.  Some patients there were up night after night suffering from dental pain.

This made him aware of the suffering of those outside his socio-economic status.  Now he wishes to give back to the community with a day of free dental care for those in need.

Tomorrow is the day.  That will be April 19th 2013.

I congratulate Dr. Hammel for doing this work.

It is sad that so many people, even in the US, go without adequate dental care for lack of funds.   So, it is great that you, Dr. Hammel,  are making a difference!

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hammel.

Tooth Decay Is On The Rise In Preschoolers

I found an article about tooth decay in preschoolers here.

On the surface, this premise sounds like this is a 'new' phenomenon.  But, I suspect that this has been the case for quite a long time.   Juices and milk are full of sugars and we all know that sugar will feed tooth decay causing bacteria.

These bacteria then produce acidic waste byproducts.  These acids are what cause the creation of cavities.   More sugar leads to more bacterial growth and so forth and so on.

A Tip

Here is an idea.  Try getting xylitol tooth gel and rubbing it on the children's teeth at night.  Xylitol is also a sugar, but it is one that the bacteria cannot use.  They end up starving and dying.  These gels can sometimes be found in health food stores.   Read the label directions carefully before use.

Toothy Decay Problem

It's not a surprise that tooth problems are 'on the rise'.  They have been rampant' for a long time and not just in children either.  Consider how large the dental health industry is.   That should tell you all you need to know.

Tooth decay and other dental health problems occur frequently.  People are always being treated for them.   The treatment of dental disease must be a multi-billion dollar industry.   I guess that it could possibly be a trillion dollar industry.

It is frightening when you think about it.   Focusing on prevention is the best way to try and protect yourself and your family.  Knowledge is power.

This is my dental health prevention message for the day!

April Is Oral Cancer Awareness Month!

You can read more, make donations and find related information at The Oral Cancer Foundation Site

Oral cancer, it is estimated will be found in over 40,000 people this year.   It is also estimated that 8,000 will die from it this year as well.   That equates to 1 death every hour.

It appears that there is evidence that smokeless chewing tobacco is a contributing factor to oral cancer.    Of course, that doesn't mean that you cannot get it just because you don't chew.

HPV also appears to be a contributing factor.  This is the reason that more oral cancers are being found in people under 40 while historically a person was generally over 40.

Everything we do carries a risk.   I remember our cadaver in Gross Anatomy from about 16 years ago.  The guy had been a long-time smoker.   His lungs were charcoal black all the way through from outside to inside.

Normal lungs would be pink,  similar to the color of your lips.

So, if smoking can do that to your lungs, you can imagine what kind of problems it might cause.  Oral cancer might be one of them.

Tip:  Smoking can Kill.

I'm glad that they are raising awareness about Oral Cancer This Month.    I hope people pay attention.

Should US Schools Provide Dental Care To Students?

I found an interesting article about schools providing a  dental health safety net at Ed Source

There are some really interesting statistics in that article.  For example:

1. Children with dental health issues are 12 time more likely to miss class  due to a dental health issue than students with great dental care.

2.  Children with poor dental health care are 4 times more likely to get lower grades!

This article focuses on the State of California.   There even appears to be a state mandated program for dental health screenings.  But, there is no funding for the programs, so they are overlooked - apparently.

Their seems to be some underlying assumptions or expectations as well.

Should students be given dental care as part of the regular school program?   I bet a lot of parents would be happy about that!

The burden of costs for such programs would likely be very high and California is already having a hard time keeping everything going with their education programs  - as is the rest of the country.

Where is the balance between ever increasing expectations of things for free and how much tax payers must shell out?    Seems to me we already have financial issues in this country.  Are we going to make them worse?

On the other hand, who would be willing to stand up and say they are against what amounts to 'universal dental care' for school aged students?

Medi-Cal appears to be California's attempt to provide affordable dental care to poor children and it sounds like it has been dubbed a failure.  They are having a hard time getting enough dental health providers to accept Medi-Cal students because the program doesn't pay enough.

This brings up an interesting point.   Government programs are very costly.  Even when in place, it appears that children are still having trouble getting adequate care.

Is it possible for family's and individuals to increase their odds of preventing costly dental health procedures?   Such a possibility could potentially relieve the burden on such programs and protect the students themselves.

Share your thoughts and comments in the comment section below.

Oklahoma Oral Surgeon's Patients Sent Warning About Possible HIV or Other Infections

I read this article in the Seattle Times

Inspector's found improper procedures, improper sterilization protocols, rusty instruments and staff not authorized to administer sedation IVs, among other problems at an Oral Surgeon's Office in Oklahoma.

Frightening!

Letter's were sent out to about 7,000 patients urging them to be tested for HIV.

Please Be Careful

If you are a dental health professional, please be ever so careful about these 'little details'.  It is not fair to your patients to use rusted instruments, improper sterilization protocols or to reuse drug vials.

Patients deserve the best care.   I am sure they are paying for the best.

I do not know what to say about this type of thing.  It is horrible.  I hope that it doesn't happen very often as one expert suggested.

Patient Safety Should Come First.

Caring For Colorado Foundation and Dr. Chris J Wiant's Article on Dental Care

I found this article at the Craig Daily Press online

Dr. Wiant's article is very interesting.   It states that nearly 4 out of every 10 Coloradans don't have dental insurance.

Caring For Colorado Foundation  has been able to increase patient visits over the last 10 years  by a substantial amount.   In addition, they have helped to establish 10 non-profit clinics.  That's Awesome!

I applaud the Caring For Colorado Foundation for their efforts.   I also applaud Dr. Wiant for sharing this great information with us.

It seems to me,  based on limited knowledge, that a similar under served population exists in many states in the US.   Dental care is expensive and dental insurance is perhaps even less prevalent than regular health insurance.

The US sure is having a tough time with health care isn't it?   The cost of dental care when compared to GDP is so much higher than most (or perhaps all) other developed nations.  That is incredible, isn't it?

Unfortunately,  the problems don't seem to be fundamentally fixable.  As of yet, there has not been a solution that everyone will agree upon that actually works towards lowering health care costs and thereby presumably allowing access for more people.

As we have seen with other recent legislation, once a bill goes to lobby, it is subject to all kinds of changes from various influencers.   That means powerful money groups with big budgets will exert their influence.

Unfortunately, what these power groups want (for their group members or special interests) often does not square with what is best for the people or the nation.

But perhaps the Caring For Colorado Foundation has set an example for a possible partial solution or  offset to the problem.

Congrats again to the foundation and thanks to Dr. Wiant for writing this article.

I would love to hear some comment's from dental health professionals on this??

Dr. Laura Tills From Madison Wisconsin is Offering Free Oral Cancer Screenings In April

I thought this story about Dr. Tills,  DDS and Dr. Mathew Kutz, DDS offering free oral cancer screenings was worthy of being talked about.   Here is the full story from prweb.

I think it is fantastic that they are doing this.   Oral cancer is obviously something serious and it is not something that most offices have the ability to screen for.

Therefore, an office that is offering free screenings - even if it is only for April 2013 is news worthy.
I'm delighted to hear of their work.

Of the many things that gum disease appears, according to researchers, to be related to, increased risk for oral cancer is one of them.

It's quite amazing when you consider the volume of research that shows a connection between gum disease and all kinds of other disease, isn't it?   It appears that a long term, chronic bacterial infection in the mouth (gum disease) leads to all kinds of more significant health problems.

The bacteria: p gingivalis has even been found in heart arterial plaque!   Wow.

Prevention is important.  And many dentists and hygienists are able to educate patients and help give them helpful tips, like using the HydroFloss at home, to help improve their periodontal health.  And for many people it is working!

Congrats to Doctors Tills and Kutz for offering free screening for oral cancer during the month of April 2013!

Nova Southeastern University's Clinic Is Accepting Special Needs Patients

Looks like Nova Southeastern has opened a clinic for special needs patients that mental and /or physical challenges.   Here is the full story from Health News Florida.

This is good, special needs patients are probably very under served.  I can imagine many private dental clinics with the capacity to handle them.

Congratulations to Nova Southeastern for finding an area that needs help and then providing that service to people.

It's delightful to think that special needs patients can get needed care.   Perhaps that helps to easy their [extra] burdens in life.

Toothy Grins Store is willing to provide a special price on The Hydro Floss to the caregivers of special needs patients.   To get this pricing, please call 1-888-586-6849 and ask for David.   He will help you in this regard.

Teeth Whitening Pens With Coupon

Product:  Teeth Whitening Pens

Suggested coupon to use:   a-per10      (other coupons)

I personally would prefer to use teeth whitening pens over the tray method.  With the tray method, harsh chemicals come into contact with the gum tissue.  I do not like that.

With the pens, you have more control over where the whitening material ends up.   That is why I prefer the whitening pens.

The coupon I suggest you use for this is a-per10.  There will be a video below, showing you exactly how to apply the coupon.

Coupon a-per10 gives you free shipping + free tube of perio therapy toothpaste.  The free shipping is definitely saving you cash.   The free toothpaste is a $14 value.  (that's what it retails for).

Ready for the video to see how to save on this product?   Here it is:

University of Louisville Dental School sends faculty, students to Harlan for free clinics

You can find the full article here.

I applaud the University of Louisville for providing free clinics in Harlan county on March 23 and March 24 2013.

I think anytime the public can be served for free, it is usually a good thing.   Of course, this is a teaching university so it is also important for the public to be aware of that as well.

Even though there will be faculty licensed dentists on hand, please keep in mind that getting a second opinion is sometimes advisable before having extensive work done.

Never-the-less I applaud the University for offering free clinics.

Introducing Dr. Ellie Phillips

Dr. Phillips is the author of the book:  Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye.

She is also the author of the Zellies Complete Mouth Care System.

Dr. Ellie has been a leader who focuses on dental health prevention.  That is something I definitely applaud.

With over 30 years of clinical experience she has been able to help many people achieve and maintain a healthy mouth.   That translates to patients keeping more teeth for a lifetime of good service as well as avoiding expensive dental bills and pain.

Dr. Phillips deserves much praise as a trail blazer who has worked diligently to help the public understand that prevention really does pay.  Prevention pays the patient.  This shows that Dr. Ellie's heart is in the right place.

Dr. Ellie has her own line of xylitol gums and mints called Zellies.   Her brand of xylitol has helped and will continue to help people with prevention.   The pH elevating powers and bacteria hindering properties of xylitol make it a powerful tool in the arsenal of those who believe in prevention.

I applaud Dr. Ellie for her hard work and efforts to truly help patients over the decades.  She shines brightly in a world that needs more light!

Thank you Dr. Phillips for all that  you have done for the people.
