How Do I Make My Gums Healthy?

How Do I Make My Gums Healthy?

You might be struggling with an issue that you only recently encountered - unhealthy gums, a.k.a gum disease, gingivitis or periodontal disease.

First, it is important to understand that you are not alone.   Many dental professionals feel that about 75% of people have gum disease right now!

Gum disease is the number one reason that people lose one or more teeth.   The expensive and imperfect solution of implants or the less expensive dentures are not the best outcome.  Saving your own natural teeth is a far superior solution that may cost less money and pain in the long run.

If you are in danger of losing one or more teeth right now

If you are in danger of losing a tooth right now, here is a tip:   Go find a periodontist that is willing to save your tooth or teeth instead of replacing them with implants.   Periodontist are the specialists who have skill in this area.

You may have to visit 2, 3 or 4 of them to find one who will save your tooth. One possible reason reason that you may need to hunt around may be that it is so much more lucrative to pull your tooth or teeth and install an implant or implants.    Doctors make good money doing this day in and day out.

Since so many people have gum disease, they have a virtually limitless supply of patients who need implants.

Have you wondered why you have never heard that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss?   Or that 75% of people have gum disease right now?   It seems strange doesn't it?

Yet, the facts are the facts.  You can ask a dental professional that you know, most will say it is 75%.  Some say a little lower and some say even higher.   But 75% is generally what you'll hear.  That's a lot of people!

If A Tooth Is Loose

If you have an adult tooth that is loose, go see a periodontist immediately.   Drop whatever else you are doing and take care of this right away.

Adults should NOT have any loose teeth at all.

Making Gums Healthy

How much work you need to make your gums healthy seems to vary from person to person.   Since so many people have gum disease, it should be obvious that brushing and flossing alone works for some, but not most people.

Of course, you should continue to follow your dentists instructions and brush and floss according to the schedule they recommend.  Brushing and flossing are important and you should do both according to your dentist's instructions.  However, it seems that they may not be enough unhealthy gums.

That means something else may be needed.  How much, again, varies from person to person.

One device that I've found to be extremely helpful personally and that others have found helpful too is the Hydro Floss

It is very hard to know what you are working towards if you do not have a measurement to guage the health of your gums.   This should go beyond someone just looking at your mouth and giving you an opinion.

Fortunately,  there is an objective measurement you can use.   The measurement is referred to as 'periodontal pocket depth'.    Every time you go in for a checkup or cleaning, your local office should be more than happy to tell you what these readings are.

You want to be below 3mm.   Generally speaking, most dental professionals will deem your gums to be healthy when your periodontal pockets are 3mm or less.   Anything above, generally speaking again,  is going to be considered unhealthy.

So, now you know the 'secret'.   I hope you use it to your advantage.

Again, the Hydro Floss has been a powerful ally for a lot of people.  You can check out the reviews for the HydroFloss here.

I hope you found this article helpful.  Please leave any comments, suggestions or experiences that you would like to share in the comments section below.

Can You Cure Bleeding Gums?

Can You Stop Bleeding Gums?

Bleeding gums are very often, but not always, due to gum disease.  Visit your local dentist or periodontist for proper diagnosis of your situation and for confirmation that your bleeding gums are due to gum disease.

Gum disease is very common.  According to many dental professionals as many as 75% or 3 out of every 4 people have gum disease right now.  The problem is that many people are not aware that they have it.

A visit to the dentist may not reveal it either unless your are very specific in your questions to the dentist and hygienist.   They are often focused on your teeth and less so on your gums.

The specific question you should ask is: "What are my periodontal pocket depths?"  Generally speaking, periodontal pocket up to 3 mm is considered normal and most dental professionals would say your gums are healthy with these readings.

However, if you are above 3mm, generally speaking, most dental professionals would say that your gums are not healthy - gum disease.

It really doesn't matter what moniker they give it.  Gingivitis is gum disease.  Albeit, most professionals think the damage is minimal when you 'only' have gingivitis.

What should be clear to you is that you want to shrink those periodontal pockets as much as you possibly can.

There may not be a 'cure' for gum disease, but if you can shrink those pocket depths down to 3mm or less and keep them there, you have effectively beat the problem.

Everyone Has Periodontal Pockets

It's easy to make a mistake on this point.  Everyone has periodontal pockets.  The question is, how deep are those pockets?

What Can You Do?

I personally, and many others I have spoken too, have obtained good results from the HydroFloss Oral Irrigator.

I experienced the shrinking of my periodontal pockets to normal levels through use of the HydroFloss, as confirmed by my dentist.

I continue to use the HydroFloss to maintain those pockets at reasonable levels.

I have spoken to many people over the years who have obtained similar results through use of the HydroFloss.

The HydroFloss is Better Than Other Irrigators?

It does appear to be the case when you take into account two peer-reviewed and published studies in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

Both studies, done several years apart,  found that the HydroFloss with it's technology worked better than irrigators that did not have this tech installed.   'Work better'  means a greater reduction in plaque and tartar buildup.

This greater reduction may account for healthier gums.  For example, the pockets shrinking to the point that they are considered healthy.  This was my personal experience.

I hope this article was able to provide some understanding as to what healthy gums are and how you can tell the difference from healthy gums and unhealthy ones.

*always be under the care of a periodontist or dentist when dealing with any dental health problem or suspected problem.

Why Are My Gums Bleeding?

If your gums are bleeding when you brush of floss, it's possible (even likely) that you have gum disease.

Of course, you'll want to visit a good periodontist to verify that is the cause of the problem and not something else.

If you are also / instead waking up with some blood in your mouth, you should go see a doctor.  Chances are that this is also gum disease but you definitely want to get checked out by a licensed periodontist who can give you a thorough explanation of what is going on with your gums or rule gum disease out and find a different cause.

If it is gum disease, don't worry, you are not alone.  Nearly 75% of people have some gum disease - this is commonly believed by dental professionals.  They see it pretty much ever day in their practices.

It's so common that a billion dollar industry or industries revolve around it.   There are expensive dental procedures like "deep cleanings" (scaling and root planing or SRP),  laser surgeries and other procedures that dentists have crated to 'treat' the problem.

Unfortunately, this is not usually a one-time fix.  These expensive procedures will likely be needed again.   This is a conveniently left out fact when things are being explained to the patient.

Another, unfortunately left out piece of information is that the HydroFloss can often help people to reduce the amount of gum disease causing plaque and tartar build up between regular dental cleanings.   Sometimes, this is enough to help people make their gums healthy and keep them that way.   This can always be verified or tested at each office visit.

Of course, we do sell the hydrofloss on this site.  I write about it because it has actually helped many, many people including myself.  So, I have no problem whatsoever telling other people about it.   I know the chances of helping them too are pretty high.   In addition, results can easily be verified at your next dental appointment.

Oh, what does this have to do with bleeding gums and gum disease?   When your gum tissue becomes healthy again, it is very likely that bleeding, if it is truly caused by gum disease, will abate.  This is because healthy gums do not generally bleed when brushed or flossed.

This is a powerful tool that you can use at home.  Results can be verified (or discredited) by your very own dentist.   But if you are among those who get good results, you'll be delighted to have this tool in your arsenal.

They make great gifts too.

That's what I want to say on this topic.

No matter what, if you have bleeding gums, please go see your dentist or preferably a periodontist, without delay.  It is vitally important for your dental health.

Tons of research has shown that dental health is often related to more serious diseases like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, lung infections, low birth weight babies and scientists suspect many other diseases too.

It pays in multiples to get this area of your life under control and keep it that way.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, bar none.

The book:  What You Should Know About Gum Disease is a layman's guide to fighting gum disease that can be ordered through any bookstore.    I wrote it.    Always be under the care and guidance of a good periodontist when facing a problem like this.

Both the HydroFloss as well as What You Should Know About Gum Disease can be found on this site,  or Amazon if you prefer.

If you have a question or two, please leave them below.

How To Stop Bleeding Gums

How To Stop Bleeding Gums

When it gums to bleeding gums, you should always be under the care of a good periodontist ( a dentist with special training in gum care).  Periodontist have an additional 2 years of training beyond regular dental school - all focused on gum health and disease.

Bleeding gums are traditionally a sign of gum disease.   However, there are other possibilities and that's one more reason you want a periodontists to check out the situation.

How To Stop Gum Disease is a 20 or so page guide I wrote for people interested in this topic.   You can get a no cost copy here:    http://blog.toothygrinsstore.com/2013/08/how-to-stop-bleeding-gums-and-you.html

The problem is that most people have gum disease.  It's estimated to be about 3 out of every 4 people or 75%.   Dentists see so much of it that they often say nothing until it is time for an expensive treatment.  If you are like me, you would rather not wait until that time comes.

Bleeding gums may or may not be present when you have gum disease.

Prevention Pays

Prevention pays the patient in the form of savings.  You save time, money and pain.  Those are three very important factors!  If you are not motivated by saving money, you most likely would prefer to save time and avoid pain.

Gum surgeries and deep cleaning treatments can be both painful and expensive.  Unfortunately, they often need to be repeated.

However, if you can prevent these things you can save an awful lot of money!

If you want to know more about stopping bleeding gums due to gum disease,  check out the above publication.

And please remember, this page is the opinion of the author only.  You should always be under the care of a physician or periodontist for any dental health related matters.

One of the most beneficial tools I know of is this one, right here.   Click to see it.

I hope all of that made sense.  If not, please do leave your questions below in the comment section.

Conversation About Saving Loose Teeth

This conversation took place as a result of a previous article on saving loose teeth.

Zsofia:

"Thank you David, I really needed this now. One of my wisdom teeth is very loose and I was going to have it pulled. But if there is even a slight chance that it can be saved I will definitely go see a periodontist.

Thank you, you are the best. And your book is awesome.

Much love,

Zsofia"

Me:

Thanks Zsofia,

Don’t get discouraged, the good periodontists are out there.

Sometimes, you have to look harder and sometimes not!

Thanks for saying nice things about my book, I really appreciate that!

It helps me to know that my book is continuing to help people.

May I quote you on my blog?

What Is The Best Toothpaste For Bleeding Gums?

Question:  What Is The Best Toothpaste For Bleeding Gums?

Before we can answer that question it is important to understand a few things.

1. Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease.  You need to go see a periodontist or dentist to get
that checked out.  In more rare circumstances it could be the sign of something more sinister.  Best to get it check out right away.

2. Gum disease is something that afflicts about 75 % of the population according to many dental professionals.  Just ask any dental hygienist, they see this all day long.  3 out of every 4 People is a huge amount of the population.

3. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.  Therefore, it is in your best interest to take care of this problem right away.

4.  It is the belief of this author that while certain toothpaste may be more helpful than others, it is not likely that it is going to solve the problem of gum disease or bleeding gums by itself.

Your end goal is to get something called 'periodontal pockets' down to 3mm or below.  Your dentist can measure these for you.

One toothpaste that may be helpful is the one you see pictured to your right.

However, please see above, a toothpaste alone is not likely to be the sole solution to this problem.

This particular toothpaste contains the following ingredients:

1. Water (Aqua),  - self explantory, it's water.

2.Hydrated Silica,  - for cleaning teeth better.

3. Sorbitol, - a sugar that is as easy for the bacteria to utilize, but some bacteria still can and others can under the right circumstances.

4. Glycerin (from vegetable sources)

5. Tetrapotassium Pyrophosphate,  - This is for fighting plaque build up.

6.  Xylitol,  - This is a sugar that the bacteria definitely can NOT use.  They try to consume it and they generally die as a result.   Good stuff.

7. Sodium Fluoride (0.24%),   No comment.  Some people don't like this ingredient, others do not care that it is present.  Some doctors will tell you that this will help to kill bacteria.   You should do your own research and decide what you believe about fluoride for yourself.

8. Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate,  A cleansing agent that is less harsh and drying to the mouth than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

9. Sodium Chlorite,

10. Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil,  Peppermint has anti-bacterial qualities and is one of three that many alternative healers consider good for this type of problem.

11. Zinc Gluconate (ZincRx),  zinc is believed to be healthy for and supportive of healthy gum tissue.

12. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice,  This is Aloe Vera.

13.  Sodium Benzoate,   A Preservative.

14. Ubiquinone (CoEnzyme Q10).  Generally speaking,  CoEnzyme Q10 is believed to be supportive of healthy gum tissue.

So this is not a bad toothpaste to be utilizing.  However, once again, I wish to stress that if you have bleeding gums, you should be under the care of a dentist or periodontist.

You can find this toothpaste here.
There is one tool that I think is actually very helpful.   Many people have used it and have seen a beneficial improvement in the health of their gums.

You can read about this tool here.

In any case, your hygienist or dentist can measure those periodontal pockets for you and tell you if you have made improvements or not.

Sincerely,

Can Gum Disease Be Cured?

Can Gum Disease Be Cured?

Note: Cure is not the right word.  Very few professionals would use the word cure.   What is the right word? :  Controlled and perhaps even reduced!   But not cured...   Read on:

Many People Have Gum Disease

As Crazy as this may sound, a lot of people have gum disease.

Actually, a lot of people who have it are completely unaware.

This is not good because professionals will generally confirm for you that about Seventy-Five Percent of people have some gum disease right now.

Gum Disease Can Lead To Tooth Loss

What's really mind blowing is that gum disease is, by far, the most common cause of tooth loss.

That basically means that there are a large number of people who don't realize they lost a tooth and needed a replacement due to of gum disease!

Those implants are mighty expensive. In the US, they may run up to $2000 and more for a single one! Ouch!

Of course, you can go 'out of the country' to South America where it is less expensive. But, why not avoid the whole tooth loss thing in the first place?

Reducing The Power Of Gum Disease

To maximize your chances, you need knowledge. This book will help you to understand, in easy terms, what's going on with this.

Knowledge can equate to power, get powered up now:

The Gum Disease Fighting Trick That No One Told You About

When your periodontal pockets measure 3mm or less, generally speaking, most dental professionals will say that your gums are healthy!

How It All Started For Me

I thought I would share a little bit about my story today.

When I was somewhere in my mid thirties, the dentist and hygienist were
trying to tell me how bad my gums were.

They warned me that If I didn't get their SRP (Scaling and Root Planing
or Deep Cleaning) treatment that I was in danger of losing my teeth.

I was convinced that this treatment wasn't the right direction for
me to go in.

So, I set out trying to figure out what was going on.   I learned
that bleeding gums were definitely a bad sign.

Mine didn't bleed at home, but they bled quite a bit when I was getting
my teeth cleaned.   At the time I thought that was normal.  But, nothing
could be further from the truth.

Once I was convinced that I really did have a problem, the next step
was figuring out what to do about it.

I kept trying different things like essential oils, oil pulling, various
kinds of mouthwashes.  But, every time I went back to the dentist,
they would shake their head and tell me it was time to get their
treatment.

But I resisted.

Finally, I found the Hydro Floss.  When I went back
after using it for a few months, everything had changed.

My gums were healthy again!  This time my dentist was shaking her head
in disbelief!  She said, "Whatever you are doing, keep it up.".

But what really bothered me is that she never wanted to know what
I was doing.   I would think she would want to share that with her
other patients.

That was naive thinking on my part.  I understood what was going on
in retrospect and after thinking about it for a long time.

This inspired me to write the book: What You Should Know About Gum
Disease.    http://WhatYouShouldKnowAboutGumDisease.com

And this is the reason I sell the Hydro Floss today.  I don't think
there is anything that works better and I'm not kidding when I say that.

http://BestFlosser.com

So, if you have one, count yourself as among the lucky ones.
Hopefully, you are getting GREAT results.   If not, you should
call me.  Chances are there are a few tidbits of information that might
skyrocket your results.

You'll know its true if your dentist tells you your gums are healthy
again!

Sincerely,

Bleeding Gums And Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease.  If your gums bleed when you brush or floss or even at the dental office during regular cleanings, that is, generally speaking, a sign of diseased gum tissue.

You can ask your dentist to tell you for sure and rule out anything else.  But, the fact remains that most people have gum disease.

Dental professionals tell us that about 75% or 3 out of every 4 people do.  They see it every day. Therefore, they might not tell you if they see it, because it is so rampant that it has become 'normal' to them.

But it is not 'normal' and you should be concerned.  Eventually, when things get bad enough, your dental professional will probably suggest an expensive treatment.  So, try not to wait until things get to that point.

There are two resources that I (disclosure) wrote:

1.  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy Steps  get it here

2.  What You Should Know About Gum Disease  get it here

Both publications can provide you with critical information that you likely do NOT already know.  Perhaps they can even empower you to help yourself avoid the aforementioned expensive treatments.  Protecting yourself and your family are very important.

Why lose teeth if you don't have to?   Oh, did I forget to mention that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss?

Gingivitis is just the beginning stage of gum disease.  Take it seriously.  Save and protect your teeth and dental health.

Sincerely,

Progress On Gum Care - Customer Report

I received an email from a customer entitled :  Progress on Gum Care.

Here it is:

Hi Dave,

I talked to you at length about 3 months ago.  I had been on a largely vegetable diet and gotten negative report from my periodontist  regarding my gums separating from my teeth.  I had one pocket at 7 mm (behind my last molar lower left).  I have gone back to a rich diet with lots of calories and protein.  I also followed suggestions you made:
  • Use 2 full tanks of water in my Hydroflosser 2 x a day
  • Use my tooth brush (Sonicare) lightly
  • Try pocket pals (that I purchased from your store) to some extent
  • Use Therabreath and Closys mouth washes for a neutral ph mouth
You asked that I feedback to you the results after about 3 months.
Last week I had my cleaning (root scaling and planing style).  My 7 mm was down to 6 mm and one other area in my mouth was better.  The good news is that no further deterioration had occurred and I don’t have to have any gum surgery.  My gums look healthy and are not bleeding.  The gum around my one implant is looking good.

I’m going to keep using this style with a goal to all 3mm or less pockets.

Thanks for your help, Dave.

[name removed for privacy]

Sincerely,

Your Gums Are Bleeding Because You Don't Floss - Not Always True

its not always true that you are not flossing and brushing

There are people who do floss and their gums bleed.

This is still a bad sign.

You are tired of being scolded by the dentist for not flossing when you really do floss every day?
Sometimes regular brushing and flossing is just not enough to prevent gum disease.

Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease.  Of course, you want your dentist to check that to rule anything out, but much or even most of the time its gum disease.

Not that you are alone!

Many people really do have gum disease.  Some dental professionals say about 75% of people do.

One time, I read on the Mayo Clinic's website,  if my memory is correct, that they thought 95% of people over age 65 had gum disease!

This is bad because gum disease is definitely the number one cause of tooth loss!

So take action today.  Educate yourself, starting today!

The Dentist Makes My Gums Bleed And Then Blames It On Me! Or?

Yep.  Well, let's break this down a bit.  I'm afraid I have a little bad news to impart here.

The dentist bleeds my gums and blames me
Sorry to disappoint you with this news.  It's not your dentist's fault.  It really is your responsibility and your fault.   Sorry to do that to you, but if I can't wake you up now, it's a disservice to you.

So I had to say that.

Now pay attention:  Your dentist generally doesn't do anything that should make your gums bleed.  (ok if they are pulling a tooth, that's another story)

Pulled teeth are something you should strive to prevent anyhow!   Hint:(Clues all over this site)

If your gums bleed during examinations and cleanings, that is a sign that you have gum health problems.

A.K.A gum disease!

It Feels Like They Are Sticking Straight Pins Into Your Gums

This is just one more indicator that your gums are not healthy.  When / if you are able to get them to be healthy again, that probing won't hurt you at all.  You won't feel it.

I hope I've given you enough clues here to help you understand that this doesn't come from your dentist.

This is a problem you have to fix and relatively quickly too.

Dear Lady Who Just Cleaned My Teeth - My Gums Are Bleeding - Thank You

bleeding gumsI can tell you that this is not a very nice thing to say to your hygienist.

In fact, it is completely wrong.    Your hygienist actually is doing you a big favor when she cleans your teeth.

In fact, dental hygienists are the unsung heroes of dental health care and prevention.

Your gums should not bleed during a normal dental cleaning and check up.

Maybe a very tiny amount. Maybe

But, if you are getting a lot of blood and she is filling up gauze strip after strip, that is NOT a good sign.

It probably means you have gum disease.  Your dentist will be able to tell you if that is the case.

Most people do have some gum disease, unfortunately.

therabreath gingivitis products
Therabreath has a line of products for fighting gingivitis.

It's called PerioTherapy.   And you can find those products here.

You will see that there is a full line of healthy gum products there.

Tip: If you are able to get and maintain your periodontal pockets to 3mm or less, most dental professionals will say that your gums are healthy!

Of course, generally speaking, when they are above 3mm, most dental professionals will say your gums are not healthy.

Therefore, getting to 3 and below can make a big difference in your dental health and what you spend in the future on dental care.

Regular checkups and cleanings are always important. But, what you do at home is crucial.  Your dentist can only see you a few times a year.  But your struggle to get and maintain healthy gums and teeth is a daily one.

Therefore, what you do at home becomes crucial to your dental health success!   Don't miss out.

This is one of my favorite products for dental health, I use it daily!

Just because your gums do not bleed does not mean that you are free of gingivitis or gum disease.  Sometimes there is no bleeding present.  Other times there is.  Never assume you are safe just because your gums don't bleed.   Your periodontist can examine you and give you the results.
