Spread of Hepatitis C From Dental Office Confirmed

I was reading that they did find evidence that a dental office in  Tulsa Oklahoma did indeed spread Hepatitis C to on at least one instance

dental office infects at least one patient with hep C
This is the first time this has been noted to have happened at a dental clinic.  But whether it is actually the first time or not is debatable.   There are so many ways for microbes to find their way from one person to another that it is very conceivable that this isn't the 'first time'.   It's only the first time they found evidence of it.

I previously wrote on this topic here.

You can more from the AP here.

If you have ever taken a microbiology course with a lab, then you probably know quite well how many microorganisms are all around us.  Some are benign, some are infectious.

Your health depends on a strong and working immune system.  Never forget about your body's natural defenses.   Don't let your body run down.   The body has amazing powers but it needs to be healthy, rested, hydrated and in relatively good shape to keep a healthy immune response going.

At any rate. It is indeed sad to hear about this.

Even so,  this is probably not the 'first time' something like this has happened.

If you are in the medical or dental field, it is important to follow all protocols for sterilization as you already know.   This particular office is notable for letting all kinds of things go wrong.

And this is why he will be in some trouble as a result.   Patient safety HAS to be a priority.  With the stronger and more resistant strains of microbes showing up, you might even think it is dangerous to stay at a hospital.

Message:  Professionals, maintain vigilance in protocol.   Patients, keep your body as healthy as you can.  Having a strong immunity can help to somewhat protect you when accidentally exposed to something nasty.

The Dentist Makes My Gums Bleed And Then Blames It On Me! Or?

Yep.  Well, let's break this down a bit.  I'm afraid I have a little bad news to impart here.

The dentist bleeds my gums and blames me
Sorry to disappoint you with this news.  It's not your dentist's fault.  It really is your responsibility and your fault.   Sorry to do that to you, but if I can't wake you up now, it's a disservice to you.

So I had to say that.

Now pay attention:  Your dentist generally doesn't do anything that should make your gums bleed.  (ok if they are pulling a tooth, that's another story)

Pulled teeth are something you should strive to prevent anyhow!   Hint:(Clues all over this site)

If your gums bleed during examinations and cleanings, that is a sign that you have gum health problems.

A.K.A gum disease!

It Feels Like They Are Sticking Straight Pins Into Your Gums

This is just one more indicator that your gums are not healthy.  When / if you are able to get them to be healthy again, that probing won't hurt you at all.  You won't feel it.

I hope I've given you enough clues here to help you understand that this doesn't come from your dentist.

This is a problem you have to fix and relatively quickly too.

How Do I Stop My Gums From Bleeding?

Answer:  This is a situation that needs to be checked out by your dentist or periodontist right away.  The most likely cause is gum disease, but you need someone to rule out other possibilities.

Gum Disease is very prevalent.  Many dental professionals will say that about 75% of people have this problem.

Regardless of who you talk to or what numbers they give, it is clear:  Many people have gum disease and most people don't know it.

Periodontal pockets are one of the key measures that a periodontist will use to determine if you have gum disease or not.

Therefore, you want those pockets to become smaller, assuming that your problem is gum disease.

stop bleeding gumsThis machine has helped many people, including myself, in this regard. The good news is that you can use it at home and then have your periodontist / dentist verify if your pockets have shrunk.

Isn't that elegant and simple?  Of course, you want to use the machine properly.

Also, nothing under the sun will work 100% of the time for 100% of the people.  But your doctor can help you verify if your gums are healthier.  Of course, if you see the bleeding stop, that would be a good thing too, right?

Even though it is elegant and simple, you may still have some questions.  And I like to answer this type of question.  So give us a call at 1-888-586-6849.   Ask for me, David.  No obligation, just conversation.

Otherwise, read more about the Hydro Floss now.

Your Dental Health Should Be A Priority

is your dental health a priority? It should be. I mean that in a nice way, I really do.   So many people are busy with their lives.  They don't often take time to think about their dental health and how it is really a reflection of the body's health.

Both ancient wisdom and modern science agree.  An unhealthy mouth is often a reflection of an unhealthy body.

In Ancient days, and probably still today, farmers always look at an animals mouth before purchasing it.  They intuitively understood that a sick mouth meant there was probably a sick body there too.

Modern researchers continue to discover connections between gum disease (which most people have at least a little of) and many other diseases, including heart disease and stroke.   Both old wisdom and modern science agree on this point.

I know you get tired of hearing all those people harp on you about dental health.  I used to hate that too.   And I have OFTEN thought they had ulterior motives.  They very well may.

But, that doesn't really change the truth about the connections that exist.

It does pay to prevent dental health problems.

Take it from someone who doesn't stand to gain thousands up thousands of dollars, your dental health is important!

Take it from someone, who was trying his best to avoid an expensive treatment.
I was able to do so, because I developed some knowledge and I found the right tool.

Part of my success at avoiding expensive treatment was from knowledge and understanding.  I put that in the book : What You Should Know About Gum Disease.

Another part of my success was due to finding the right tool to do the job I needed done.  That tool is what I call the Best Flosser.

And now, I have shared these resources with you.   Even though I have done that, I know you may not listen to me.   Let's face it, most people are intent on following the mainstream.  They will go ahead and go for the Scaling and Root Planing Treatment or the Gum Grafts or the other surgeries that will be both costly and require some recovery.

They will spend a lot of money on expensive treatments.  Those are the same treatments that a wise person can learn to prevent.   You know what many doctors say?   "Prevention doesn't pay."  A doctor told me that when I told him about my book.    Isn't that telling?   I think it is.

I can tell you that prevention does pay.   It pays the patient.  And it can pay off big time in savings and hassles in the future.

prevent dental health problems and save money later.

I have an experience to share.  Not just mine either.  I have a story to tell.  If you want to hear that story, give me a call.   1-888-586-6849.    There is no obligation or anything like that.  But maybe I have information that is worth hearing / learning.

Of course, you always want to listen to and be under the care of your dentist.  But, that doesn't mean a person can't learn things that can help her further, right?   You should always get your regular cleanings and checkups.   That's important.   But, even most dental professionals will acknowledge that what you do at home, every day, and between office visits, has the greatest impact on your dental health.

Sincerely,

FSA, HSA or HRA Reimbursement for The HydroFloss

You can check with your specific health care plan, but it may be possible to obtain partial or full reimbursement for your Hydro Floss based on signed document by your dentist.

It will have to list the diagnosis - most likely "Gingivitis". And "Treatment":  Use your Hydro Floss 1-4 times daily for X amount of time.

Have the doctor sign and date this letter with his name, address and telephone number. Then take this document and submit it to your health plan.  Of course, your specific plan may have its own quirks, but it should be possible to obtain reimbursement.

It will be 100% up to your health plan administrators whether they will accept this document or not. Any and all questions about this should be directed to your health plan providers

 -----

You can check back here. I might have a sample document available later this week or next week.

What Do You Think About Fluoride Comment 2

Thanks to the Holiday311 for his comment about Fluoride.  As I mentioned in the video, the pro-fluoride side seems to be missing from this public forum.   If you are pro-fluoride, this is your opportunity to step up to the plate.

I would save that peaceful, well thought out and logical explanations to any viewpoint are the best way to proceed.   However,  is is perfectly acceptable to simply say " I am for it" or "I am against".
There is not minimum word count qualify.

Having said that, I think it would be great to also hear more of from the 'against' side as well.  So, regardless of which side of the fence you are on,  your comments will be welcome.  Only hate posts will be removed.

If you have some insight into fluoridation of water in drinking supplies, please do feel free to share that information.

As the moderator of the page, I have to stress that I am requiring myself to take a neutral stance.  I do have thoughts on this topic, but since I am moderating, I don't have the right to share them in this forum.

Will The Hydro Floss Help You? Video

Will the Hydro Floss Help You?

Most likely, it will.  But if you have specific questions and don't mind answering a few questions so that I can give you better information suited to you, feel free to call us at the number at the top of your screen.

One Hydro Floss will serve a family of four.  It comes with several color coded jet tips.   Each member of the family can have their own jet tip and the colors keeps them from being mixed up.
If you need more regular tips, you can get them here.

A Test For You

You can find out if the Hydro Floss will work for you by knowing what your periodontal pocket depths are before you start using it and comparing them to the depths after using it effectively for a solid month.

These numbers are what your dentist and / or hygienist should be measuring at every visit anyway.  You should be able to call them to get your current numbers.

Generally speaking, 3mm and below is considered good and above that is generally considered a problem.  Your own dentist or hygienist will be able to take these readings and let you know what they are.  These numbers will also help you to see if you have any 'problem areas' to focus on.

Compare the current numbers with those you have after using the Hydro Floss  effectively for a month to find out how  it is working for you.

Do You Really Have 8 Cavities?

Why You Should Be Careful When Told You Have A Cavity

"I've  got a creepy feeling about this Batman"

Ever get that creepy suspicious feeling when things seem a little 'odd' or 'off'?   I do.  I get it a lot.  Sometimes honoring that feeling can really pay off.   I mean as in saving real money.

I don't remember when I first heard about this phenomenon with cavities, but it turns out to be accurate - verified by my own experience - and others' too.

I have also talked to others that have had similar experiences.

For example, I remember back in the late '90s a coworker told me a story about a dentist who told her she had 8 cavities.  She went to another who said she didn't have any!

True Story

For me,  just a couple of years ago, I had an experience.  But, it wasn't the first one.   It's just one that still annoys me today.   If I hadn't listened to my instincts, I might have ended up with a lot of expensive and unnecessary dental work.

My periodontist noticed that I had a 'leaky' filling.  That's when a filling is starting to break down and their is the potential for particles to get trapped in or under there and perhaps a new cavity could even form.  So, it should be replaced.

Fillings are not really his thing after all.  His specialty is periodontics.  So, he referred me to another dentist.

I went to the new dentist, sat down in the chair, and he examined me.  Aside from the leaky filling tooth, which he suggested might need a crown, he found three 'cavities'.    He had a nice fancy magnifying device to show me the dark spots which he claimed needed to be filled!

Oh, and for the leaky filling tooth:  That's the one he wouldn't know if it needed a crown or not until he 'got in there'  How convenient that he had a fancy crown making machine right there in the office.

LOL, my creepy feeling indicator was measuring high that day.    When I left, the receptionist asked when I wanted to schedule an appointment to get all the work done.   I said, no thanks and left.
I found another dentist.  No cavities that he could find!   In addition, he was absolutely positive that the leaky filling tooth would NOT need a crown (and it didn't).

At the end of the day,  who knows how much money, pain and future dental expenses I saved myself by finding another dentist and getting a second opinion!   I say future dental expenses because fillings break down and need to be replaced.  Crowns can have problems too!

We know I saved myself from at  at least 3 unneeded fillings for sure.

Fast forward several years, I have been to at least two other dentists since then.  No mention of these three cavities from any of them!

Some Things To Be Aware Of

I've talked to a lot of people, I'm not the only person with such an experience.

Some dentists are too eager to 'drill and fill'.

You have the right to get a second opinion any time your 'creepy feeling' indicator goes off.  (And you should get another opinion whenever the slightest doubt persists)!

There are good dentists and bad.  You are going to need to figure out how to sort them out if you don't want to spend a lot of money that you really didn't need to spend.

Teeth can heal.   The beginning stages of cavity formation can reverse before things get to the point of a true cavity.   There is a point though, when it really is a cavity that should be filled.

EX.  A different dentist once told me that filling a 'sticky' spot was called 'preventive' dentistry.   I denied her wish and went to another dentist who told me there was NO CAVITY there!

I don't know about you, but I sure don't need to spend extra money and have unnecessary holes drilled into my teeth!

Fillings may eventually need to be replaced.  This can take a long time or it can take as little as seven years.    Every time they 'replace' a filling, the hole is made bigger.   You can only do that so many times and then the tooth structure cannot support itself any longer.    -  root canal and crown?

If you have any doubts about any procedure or treatment - It often PAYS YOU to get a second opinion.   The savings could be enormous.

Sound off in the comment section below.   Would love to hear other stories.

I'm not picking on dentist here.  There are good ones out there.  You just have to be able to find differentiate the good ones from the bad.    You should definitely go for regular checkups, get your teeth cleaned and don't avoid work that MUST be done.

Sincerely,

What's Worse For Your Teeth? Tea or Coffee ?

I received this question via twitter:

What's Worse For Your Teeth? Tea or Coffee ?

If you want to ask me a question on twitter, you can ask this profile.

Or you can ask on this site via the contact form.

What's Worse For Your Teeth? Tea or Coffee ?

Answer:

My opinion is that coffee is far worse on your teeth than tea.   Coffee is very, very acidic.  It is probably more acidic than you would initially imagine.   In fact, it is nearly as acidic as soda.  And soda often contains phosphoric acid!   So that should tell you something.

Tea is not nearly as acidic.    Therefore, I would say that tea is better for your teeth than coffee.

Acid is bad for teeth because it can directly breakdown the tooth enamel.   In addition,  the 'bad bacteria' in our mouths love acid.  It makes them multiply more rapidly.    In turn, the greater amounts of  'bad bacteria' create even more acid as a waste byproduct.

You can probably imagine the potential for a loop that is not healthy for your body at all.

Fee free to ask a follow up question or ask for clarification in the comment section below this post.

Does Oil Pulling Actually Do Anything Positive?

Does Oil Pulling Actually Do Anything Positive?

You are certainly welcome to share your thoughts on oil pulling in the comment section below.

I have mixed feelings about oil pulling.   Mainly, when I experimented with it, It seemed to induce bleeding in a gum region that was previously not bleeding.

It could be that it was the kind of oil I was using.

Yet, I hear many people say that oil pulling is great.    But, what is it great for?   Does it really make your dental health,  in particular your periodontal health better?

I think the real measure of that would be through before and after periodontal pocket depth readings as taken by a registered hygienist or dentist.

Since, I had my own negative experience with oil pulling, I'm pretty skeptical.

Does anyone have information to add about oil pulling?  It can be your own experience or the experiences of someone you personally know.

If you have any real objective (or even good subjective) information or insight to share, use the comment section below.

A Tip To Help You Brush Your Teeth More Gently

If you know that you have been brushing too hard and have eroded your gum line, or your dentist has told you to not brush so hard, this might be for you.

If you have been having trouble stopping yourself from brushing too hard, this might work to help.

Only follow this tip after you check with your dentist or hygienist.

Tip:  Try grasping your toothbrush without your pinky finger.   Many people do not realize that their strongest gripping finger is their pinky finger.

This may help to "force" you to brush more gently.

Sincerely,
