What You Can Do If You MUST Eat Sugary Breakfast Cereal

Yes, they can be yummy and quite delicious!  But, what about their impact on your teeth?

Sugary breakfast cereals can get pretty sticky when they are wet (with milk).   When you grind them down with your teeth they break into nice sugary bombs that are just small enough to get stuck in the crevices of your teeth.

That pure sugar can then begin to feed the 'bad bacteria' that secrete the acids that can damage your tooth enamel as well as the health of your gum tissue!   Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss after all.

If you look carefully, you might even discover that those little sugar laden particles are still crammed into some of the crevices of your teeth even after you brush AND floss.

OUCH.  That means they can continue to do damage.   What if you drink a soda or cup of coffee on top of that?   Oh,  more acid accumulates!

Anyway, what do you do when you can't get rid of those little pesky crushed up and mashed in flakes of delightful sugar stuck in your teeth?

You might want to try oral irrigation.  This is where a nice gentle stream of water is used to dislodge particles and substances stuck on and between your teeth.   Many people remark that even after brushing and flossing, irrigation dislodges more stuff.

Quick, while you are still thinking about it and before you lose this page:  Read about my favorite oral irrigator.

This is your dental health thought for the day!

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn Proclaims February as Gum Disease Awareness Month

Here is the story from the Chicago Dental Society's Website.

Governor Quinn, according to the above site, has declared February as: "Gum Disease Awareness Month".

This is great.  Another state is joining the call for awareness.   I wrote about Oklahoma the other day.

In the article, they mention that 85% of people have some gum disease and less than half of them know it.   That should be a wake up call for everyone who reads this!

This is why it is so important that people have more awareness about this problems.  Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.   Yet, some people lose teeth and get implants or dentures and still don't know the reason.

Creating awareness is one of the reasons I wrote my book:  What You Should Know About Gum Disease.  ISBN:  978-0981485508

If people just knew a little more, they might be able to save themselves from expensive dental treatments down the road.  Moreover, they would have a better chance at keeping all of their teeth for a lifetime of good service.

I applaud Governor Quinn for making this proclamation and I also applaud Oklahoma for doing the same thing.  I would like to see more states follow suite and more dental organizations too!

Sincerely,

Dental Health Books Worth Reading

Dental Health Books Worth Reading.

I thought it would be fun to list these dental health books that are worth reading.   The authors of these books have challenged the standard preconceived notions about dental health.   They are all interesting and speak from interesting perspectives.

1.  Root Canal Cover Up - George Meinig, DDS.  Dr. Meinig explains one of the biggest problems with root canals.   If you have or are about to get a root canal, it would be to your benefit to read this book and understand what kind of problems can occur.    This is wonderful book from a doctor with tons of experience, just like the book above.

If you care about dental health, this is a must read.    Same Topic:  There is a documentary called "Root Cause" - if you are worried about root canals, whether you have had one or it is being recommended to you, you should probably watch this documentary.

2.  Cure Tooth Decay  - Ramiel Nagel and Timothy Gallagher, DDS.  This book is all about nutritional changes that can impact your dental health.    I have some objections to this book.

I don't agree with everything in this book.   But, the general information and "most" of the nutritional information is good.   I would say this:  Don't eat raw meats.  Don't eat raw organ meats.  Don't use 'fermented' cod liver oil.   Regular cod liver oil is fine.   Other than that, most of this book has good information in it.

3.  Oral Health Bible -  Dr. Bonner.  Great insight into your dental health.

4.  The Dental Diet -  Dr. Steve Lin discusses one of the most hidden aspects of your dental health - The Dental Diet!

5.  What You Should Know About Gum Disease - A Layman's Guide To Fighting Gum Disease

Finally,  at the risk of sounding self-serving I have to mention my own book.  This is because gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss bar none.   Lot's of people lose a tooth or teeth to gum disease.  They get a denture or implant and still don't know the root cause of their problem.  This ignorance can lead to more lost teeth and more expense.

Therefore, I think my book is very important and every family should have a copy.

How Old Is Your HydroFloss?

Question From A Potential Customer:  How Old Is Your Hydro Floss?

This is a question that I received this morning:  What year model is your Hydrofloss?

Today's date is January 29th 2013.  Here was my reply to this inquiry:

Hi [name removed]

We have the current model.  Our latest stock came in less than 60 days ago.   (and probably less  than that actually).

Here is a link to our Hydro Floss:

PPS: The Hydro Floss has not changed much in 25 years.   There has been nothing more than minor changes.   Essentially, it is the same machine as back in the late '80s.  (And the reason there is no need for changes is because it works!)

Meet Dr. Tate Vo

More on Doctor Vo here:

http://www.dentatesmiledesign.com/about-us/meet-dr-vo/

I first found out about Dr. Tate Vo due to her comment my post on brushing with baking soda here on this site.

She practices in Rochester,  New York.

It looks like she won a 2012 'Talk of the Town' Customer satisfaction award!

It's interesting to me that she and her hygienist work on 1 patient at a time.  It sounds like that means there are no long stays in the waiting room.   That would be fantastic for any patient.

The name of her practice is DenTate Smile Designs.  If you are looking for a better smile, perhaps Dr. Vo is the right dentist for you?

It appears that she was heavily influenced by her mother's dental practice when she was growing up.  Based on what I can gather from her website, it looks like she may be a truly caring dentist who also cares about prevention and doing right by the patient.

It is not always easy to find a good dentist.   I don't know Dr. Vo personally, so I can't vouch for her  - but if I were looking for a good dentist in the Rochester area, she would definitely be on my list to check out.

Reading through her website gave me a wealth of clues that she might be a very good and conscientious dentist.   I am always happy to meet a dentist like that.

Caring about patients goes a lot deeper than just the surface.  To me, it means the dentist is going to do what is best for the patient, not what is best for the dentist.

I think Dr. Vo is definitely worth checking out.

Her website is:   http://www.dentatesmiledesign.com

950 West Avon Road Suite 1
Rochester Hills, MI 48307
Tel No: (248) 656-2300

If you are looking for a good dentist in Rochester, NY,  I would put her on the list of doctors to visit.

Shrinking Periodontal Pocket Depths

Periodontal Pocket Depths Are Important Indicators Of YOUR Dental Health

If you do not know what these numbers are, you should ask your dentist.  This is something that should be checked during every office visit.  Although, it does appear that there are some clinics where these pocket depths are rarely if ever checked.

These Numbers Are Important

If they come out much above 3mm in multiple spots, there is a good chance that your dentist will want to perform a special treatment.  Sometimes this takes the form of an SRP or 'deep cleaning' treatment.  There could be other recommendations as well.

Personal Experience

I was in this situation a several years back.   I did not have the deep cleaning done as I did not like the what it entailed.   In the US, these treatments can also be quite expensive.  Although, I have heard in other countries they may not cost nearly as much.

What I did use is a device called the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator.    When I returned to the dentist, she said that my gums looked a lot better, the periodontal pockets were down to about normal levels.  She said:  "Whatever you are doing, keep it up."

I have sinced talked to a lot of people over the last 4 or 5 years and I do hear similar stories from other people.    Having said that, I must warn you that not every person or situation is the same and just because it worked for many does not guarantee it will work for everyone.

You must continue to work closely with your dental professional, they should be monitoring those periodontal pockets for you at every visit  to see where you are at.

Shrinking The Pockets

You should, of course, get your regular dental cleanings 2 to 4 times per year or whatever your periodontist recommends.   But why not use a powerful tool between office visits to help your periodontal (gum) tissue stay healthy.

The danger in deeper pockets is that there may be sufficient quantities of bacteria present to begin to destroy the supporting structure of your teeth.   This can lead to gum recession, loose and finally lost teeth.

This is why the periodontal pocket depths are so important to you.   Generally speaking, if you have them all at 3mm and below most dental health professionals will say that your gums are healthy.

You continue to work with your dentist on a regular basis,  but you have just do things at home to make your dental health better.  The device I mentioned above, I believe, can go a long way towards helping you as it has helped many others to do the same.

Maintaining

You can use the same tool to help you maintain your dental health.  If you are able to get your gums healthy with this method then you should be able to maintain them there as well.

Of course, I speak in general terms only here.  Specific questions about your unique dental health situation need to be addressed by your periodontist or dentist.

There are no absolute guarantees that any one thing will work for you.  However, if you can help keep things healthy and avoid expensive and painful treatments, as well as lost teeth, wouldn't it all be more than worth it?    I think so.

Customer Thoughts On The Hydro Floss

I have the privilege to talk to many customers of mine about the Hydro Floss oral irrigator.   In fact, you can read many of the customer reviews here.

Yesterday was no exception.  A man called me and he is close to 60 years old.  His hygienist and dentist have confirmed that his gum health is excellent.   His periodontal pocket depths (the objective measure of gum health) are all within tolerance.  (3 Millimeters and below).

He told me that his dentist told him about the Hydro Floss years ago and he has been using it every since.   He knows that dental health maintenance is ongoing and all you have to do is keep it going.

He mentioned that many people just don't get it.  And he is correct!  I felt like I was talking to someone who spoke the same language.  What a pleasure to talk to someone who has come to similar opinions as the those that I hold, but on his own without my influence.

Another interesting thing he told me is that he went on a three month car trip around the US.  During that time, he did not use his Hydro Floss.   When he came back, he had many 4 and 5 millimeter pocket depths.

He started using his HydroFloss again and the next time he went in he was back to normal again!
He knows that he needs to use his Hydro Floss daily to keep his gums healthy.  He said that it is a simple thing to do.

Now, I can't tell you that the Hydro Floss is definitely going to work for you.  This is because every human body and every situation is different.  Some people will use it properly and some will not, etc.  There are many variables.

But, I can tell you that it has worked for a lot of people.  That would be an awful lot of people!   Yet, it seems to be one of the best kept 'secret's and what this gentleman has realized seems to be hidden (not intentionally) from the mainstream society.

Help me let others know.  Bookmark, post to social media and anywhere else you would like to a link to this page.  Let's start to help more people know about this powerful tool!

Hydro Floss DVD

The Hydro Floss DVD

It is true that many years back, the hydrofloss oral irrigator used to ship with a DVD - well not really, it was a CD Rom.    But, that is not the case any longer.  Brand new Hydro Floss units do not ship with videos any more.

There actually are DVDs available and we have some.  We will gladly include one in with your new hydro floss purchase upon request.   Best thing to do is either order over the phone at 888-586-6849, or when you order over the Internet, there is a note section at checkout, you can put a note there for us.

We will only do this for new purchases and only while they are available.

However, I can give you access to the videos that are on those discs right now.

You'll find them both on this page:

http://www.toothygrinsstore.com/HydroFloss-p/hydrofloss01.htm

Just scroll down the page until you find them.

One is an education video and the other is a 'care and use' video.   You can learn from both of them.

If you want to get written information (very different than what is in the videos) about getting the most out of your Hydro Floss, you can simply  have this free report:  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy Steps

The report is only about 25 or so pages long.  It explains what gum disease is in very easy to understand terms and briefly.   The rest is about how to get the MOST out of your Hydro Floss and how to measure your results (very important).   With this knowledge you may be empowered and have a much better chance to achieve better gum health!

The results will be measured by your hygienist or dentist but this report will help you understand what the numbers mean to you and whether you need to focus on improvement or if you can breathe a little easier.

Hydro Floss Customer Reviews

HydroFloss Customer Reviews

 The Hydro Floss

At Toothy Grins Store, we have obtained some rather impressive customer reviews for the Hydro Floss.

You can read them here:

http://www.toothygrinsstore.com/ReviewsList.asp?ProductCode=HydroFloss01&Reviews=Y

We have approximately 12 pages of these reviews all written by real customers over the last 3 or so years.

I am very happy to sell the Hydro Floss as it is one of the tools that I mention in the book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease

I have heard from a good number of people over the last several years.  They have told me about their experiences with the Hydro Floss and how it has really improved / helped their dental health.

Incredible Benefits And Dental Health Prevention From the Hydro Floss

When you think about it,  $98 is really nothing if you can save yourself from one dental surgery, one SRP treatment,  one implant or even one simple cavity and filling.

The Hydro Floss has a proven track record and has been around for about 25 years now.   Yet, many people are still unaware of how much it can help them.   I have kind of turned it into a mission of mine to help people become more aware.

There really is nothing else like it.   It is NOT a Water Pik.   It does more than other irrigators can do and that has been clearly documented in a professional journal twice!

That journal is The Journal Of Clinical Periodontology.    If you are not sure, Periodontology is the study of the tissues that support your teeth.   They are very important and keeping them healthy should be the primary focus of your dental home care.

Gum disease is an affliction and we are told by professionals that about 75% of people have it.   This problem is also the number one cause of tooth loss.

The 'bad bacteria'  are responsible for cavities, gum disease, bad breath and more.   Have you heard some people make the point that the problem "is not sugar".   In a sense they are right, but on the other hand, not absolutely correct.   The sugar feeds the bacteria.  In turn the bacteria create acidic waste products that attack your tissues.   More sugar equates to more acid!

This cycle causes oral health problems.  Under plauqe and tartar is where the 'bad bacteria' grow and accumulate under a shield from oxygen.

The Hydro Floss has been shown to create a much greater reduction in plaque and tartar build up when compared to irrigators that do not use the same patented magnetic technology.

This is the primary reason the Hydro Floss is superior.   You can help me educate people on this topic by liking and sharing this page as well as the other pages on this site.

What You Should Know About Gum Disease Part 20

Paper Book

Gum disease remains a very significant problem for people

It is unfortunate, but likely that many people reading this will think that gum disease is something they do not have.   I say that is unfortunate because dental health professionals often say that about 75% of people do have it.

Interestingly enough, nearly everyone thinks that they are in the other 25%.  However, simple math tells us that would be impossible.  Therefore, we have a lot of people walking around who think gum disease has nothing to do with them.

They will typically find out when they are told they need an expensive treatment from their dentist.  Perhaps it will be a SRP (scaling and root planing) treatment.   Perhaps they will only find out when they are told that a tooth needs to be extracted because it has become too lose.   An implant will then be needed or a partial plate.

Even worse, some people will still not be aware that the problem was caused by gum disease.  They may face the same scenario over and over again.   Loose tooth, extraction, implant or new partial.

This is very sad and it does not need to be that way.   If you have a desire to help protect yourself, your friends and your family from the ravages of this problem, the simple and easy to understand information in the book:  What You Should About Gum Disease  may be what you need.

If you are a dentist or hygienist, you might want to consider giving a copy of What You Should Know About Gum Disease to each and every patient that comes through the door.  Chances are you don't have a lot of time for patient education, but you would still like to help all those people.   Let this book do the heavy lifting for you.

Wouldn't it be great if people had an easy way to finally understand what the problem is and how they can better work with you to prevent the ravages of this problem for taking their gum tissue and teeth away?  This one way this book can really help people.

Gum Disease Is The Number One Cause Of Tooth Loss

We know that gum disease is the biggest reason that people lose their teeth.   Accidents do happen, but the vast majority of lost teeth are caused by gum disease.   The only problem is, as stated above, people remain unaware of this fact despite countless efforts to let them know.

I think the reason is that the explanation, understanding and knowledge of what can be done cannot be boiled down to just a few sentences dispensed by the hygienist at the office.  People need more information to 'get it'.   This book makes it easy and simple to 'get it'.    Then, it may be possible for people to learn how to better protect themselves form that point forward.  This is one purpose of this book.

Imagine This Scenario

I can imagine the first time a person hears they have gum disease.   Generally, they are completely taken off guard and the response is usually something like: "What Are You Talking About"?  Or:
I have always taken good care of my teeth.

To make matters worse, the person usually hears this in conjunction with being told that an expensive surgery or treatment is needed.   This can be very irritating to a person.

It kind of makes you wonder:  "How did this happen all of the sudden"?   Most of the time, it did not happen all of the sudden.  Usually it progresses for a long period of time before you are told that you need an expensive treatment.

You may then wonder:  "Why wasn't I told about this before"?   That is a very intelligent question.  I don't want to say too much about that.  You will have to draw your own conclusions.

What Is Gum Disease?

It is a problem that affects somewhere between 40 - 80% of people, depending on who you listen to.  Generally, in my experience, most dental professionals will quote 75%  as being the number of people who have some form of gum disease.

BTW, you can be six years old and have gum disease.   Many people believe this problem is reserved for older adults.  That is not really the case.  Instead, the damage becomes more obvious over time.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.  Replacing teeth usually costs a good bit of cash.

Prevention And Mitigation

Perhaps it is better to learn more about this problem and what can be done about it?
Prevention is worth a lot.   But what is prevention?  Many people say brushing and flossing is prevention.  That is true.  But it isn't enough for most people.  If it were, would 75% of people be walking around with this problem?

Mitigation is stopping an existing problem in its tracks and then returning your gums to a healthier state.   The erosion of your gums and the bones that support them is the progression of the disease.

When enough supporting tissue (flesh and bone) is destroyed / lost, the tooth becomes loose and can even fall out or be removed.   Expensive?

Imagine what it would be like if you had a good understanding of this problem and what you can do to stop it.  Now imagine if you could help your friends and family members to have a better understanding to the point where they might save their own teeth.    Is there value in that?

I suspect there might be some value there.   What do you think?

Interesting Perspectives From My Customers

I had an interesting conversation with one of my customers who purchased a Hydro Floss today.

We talked about the work of Weston Price and potential problems with some popular health food items today.  We also talked about radioactivity in Europe and now on the West Coast of the US.

It is quite amazing how many of us easily forget about the radioactive disasters of yesterday that can be affecting our food supply and ourselves today.

Anyway, I digress.  We are here to talk about gum disease.  But, I truly enjoy the different perspectives I hear from my customers about all things health.  Regardless of whether I agree or not, it is almost always interesting hear various viewpoints from everyone.

At any rate, one thing we can be relative certain of is that about 75% of the population exhibits some form of gum disease right now.  Ask any dentist, hygienist, periodontist, or oral surgeon, they all know the problem is widespread.   That is why I believe every family needs the information contained within this book, whether they realize it or not.

A few weeks ago,  an anesthesiologist who also bought this device from me and works for a busy hospital told me that he was sure that gum disease had an awful lot to do with the cardiac disease they were constantly treating.  Many researchers have long suspected links between gum disease and many other diseases.

When you think about this, it isn't really all that new.   As you can see in history, one always checked the condition of a horse or other work animal before purchasing it.   Theyintuitively knew that a diseased mouth reflected the state of the rest of the body.   They would not buy work animals with bad teeth.    Isn't that fascinating?

Gum disease is a big problem.   Many times you can do something about it.   However,  if regular brushing and flossing were 'always enough', would we see the high incidence of gum disease that we do?  I will leave the answer for you to think about.    Perhaps you will draw the same conclusion  I have.

Knowledge is Power

If knowledge is power, not having enough would be ignorance then, wouldn't it?  Sometimes the technical language and professional language are a big barrier to understanding.
The subtitle to What You Should Know About Gum Disease is "A Layman's Guide To Fighting Gum Disease."

It is so for a reason.   I have put things in an easy to understand format and repeat the key points over and over again from different angles.   It is to drive home what this disease is and what you have to achieve to overcome it.   While the amount of effort varies from person to person, because every body is different, it is hard to get anywhere if you don't have the right information.

One key point is that the fight against gum disease,  regardless of whether you want to stop it or prevent it in the first place is a daily struggle.   No one is going to work on your teeth everyday, except you.  It isn't practical or possible to get a dental cleaning every day.  Yet, the plaque must be disrupted every day.

Perhaps brushing and regular flossing really are good enough for some people,  but what about the majority of people?   Again, you can draw your own conclusion.

Perhaps the book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease is one that belongs on your family's health book shelf?

Use the comment section below if you would like to add to the discussion.

 Part 15

About This Video And Book

This is the continuation of my reading of the book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease -

In this video we touch on the  differences in qualification regarding general dentists and periodontists.   Sometimes, it is very important to choose the right doctor.

Periodontists have extra training (about two years) and gum health and disease is usually the exact focus of their practice.   If you are looking for a more exacting diagnosis and treatment options, I would suggest that it might be best to visit a periodontist.

That is not to say that the general dentist is not able to treat gum disease, they are.   But perhaps the difference can be highlighted in this analogy:  Would you rather go to a general practitioner or a heart specialist when you have a problem with your heart?

Gum Disease Is Everywhere

The unfortunate and perhaps inconvenient truth is that around 75% of people have some gum disease right now.   Most people want to believe they are in the 25% .  Their eyes will gloss over if you mention gum disease.  They would never imagine that they could be included in the majority of people.

Unfortunately, dental professionals have given us this 75% number.  One need only ask a dental hygienist and she will be able to tell you just how bad it is.   She sees it every day.

People are lacking the right information

Gum disease is simple but it is also very complex.  It is simple to understand what it is, relatively speaking.  But fighting it is a bit more complex.

You see, every human body is different.   That means it takes a different amount of effort from each person to control this problem to the point that it is no longer causing damage in your mouth.

Each person is different.  Some people can honestly get away with normal brushing and flossing and they are fine.   Others, need to do a lot more every day to keep their gums healthy.

Since most people are probably brushing and flossing, it is easy to understand that brushing and flossing, do not work for everyone.   Otherwise, the 75% figure could not exist.

I have also found that many people just don't undertstand the basic facts about this disease.  If they did, they would certainly have  a better chance of defeating the problem.   In this case, it is really true that ignorance is not bliss!

I hope that you will now take the time to educate yourself and be better equipped to protect yourself and your family against this problem.
