What Should You Do If Your Gums Bleed?

First thing you should do is call a periodontist and schedule an appointment.

Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease.  Your periodontist can confirm that for you.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.   Unfortunately, many or even most people have some gum disease right now.    Dental professionals often cite the rate at about 75% or 3 out of every 4 people.

Since bleeding gums are a classic sign of this problem, you definitely want to get checked out right away with your dentist or periodontist.

Some additional resources that you might find valuable are:

1. The Book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease

2. The Guide:  How to Stop Gum Disease In 3 Easy Steps

3.  The Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator

I remember one woman that I talked to told me that she wakes up with blood in her mouth every day.  That is an extreme example, but even if your gums bleed while brushing and flossing, you probably have a problem that should be addressed right away.

If you have an interest in discussing anything on this site, please do give a call to the number at the top of your screen.

Chewing Tobacco Warning

A follower on twitter sent me a picture of the bottom of a certain chewing tobacco brand's box:

The warning says:   Warning:  This Product Can Cause Gum Disease and Tooth Loss

I thought that was a cool picture.   I won't post it here because I'm sure all the brands are required to do the same thing.   I am not interested in picking on one brand.

Clearly, the entire industry was required by law to post those warnings.  They sure wouldn't do it voluntarily.

Instead, I'm interested in spreading the word about preventing and stopping gum disease.   Most people have some anyway, whether they know it or not.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

There are things you can do to prevent it and arrest its progress and there are things you can do to make it worse - as the above example shows.

The vast majority of tooth loss in the world is due to gum disease.

Gum disease causes tooth loss.

Shouldn't you learn more about this problem?   If most people have it - 3 out of every 4 according to many dental professionals, shouldn't you be learning what you can do to reduce or stop it?

What do you think?  Let's start a dialog on this.

What Foods Help To Fight Gum Disease?

I've read a lot of posts on this topic.   I want to stress right up front that it would be unwise to think that you could possibly stop gum disease via diet alone.   Although, dietary changes could certainly help.

The reason I say that is as follows:  With gum disease, the bacteria have already made significant progress.  Diet may help in some regards to limit their growth, but it is unlikely to stop problem of gum disease by itself.

They key to stopping gum disease is the daily manual disruption of plaque.   The bacteria will rapidly proliferate if the plaque layer is left in tact for any length of time.

Foods that can be helpful include any vegetable with lots of cellulose (it naturally helps to clean teeth)  Carrots, celery, peas etc.

Eating quality lean meat can help provide zinc and coenzyme Q-10 - both support the gum (periodontal) tissue.

Yogurt  - yogurt contains healthy bacteria, not the kind that causes gum disease.  Japanese research has shown the preventive power of yogurt.   The benefit is in replacing the 'bad bacteria' with a strong colony of good bacteria.   This is basically probiotics for the mouth.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid

Coffee, soda and other acidic beverages  - the 'bad bacteria' love acid.  It makes them multiply faster.  If you are suffering from gum disease, you don't want to add to this problem.

Tips

1. Be under the care of a good periodontist.   They may recommend more frequent cleanings such as 3 or 4 times per year instead of only twice.  This has been shown to be helpful to a lot of people.

2.  Brush and floss 2 or more times per day or at the frequency suggested by your periodontist.

3. You will probably want to look into additional plaque disrupting tools and techniques  such as the Perio-Aid and the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator (I highly recommend this and we do sell it here on this site).

4.  Read The books:  What You Should Know About Gum Disease : A Layman's Guide to Fighting Gum Disease   and  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy Steps  - disclaimer, I wrote them both.

3 Out Of Every 4 People Have Gum Disease

This is what many (or even most) dental professionals will typically tell you when you ask them.   They generally say 75% of people have some gum disease right now.

It doesn't really matter if you are talking about:

  1. Gum disease
  2. gingivitis
  3. periodontal disease
They are all different stages of the same disease process.

That process can eventually lead to the loss of a tooth.   Severe gum recession may or may not occur before that point.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

If you think this is serious and even dangerous, you might be right.   Why lose a tooth if you don't have to.

They say that knowledge is power.

Get Some Power

Sincerely,

Autoimmune Diseases and Gum Disease Relationship

Please share any references you have on this topic in the comment section below.

I know that researchers have found many connections between gum disease and quite a number of other health problems.   While the connections are apparent and most professionals agree on the correlations, many have not been fully explained as of yet.

I had not heard of autoimmune diseases having a relationship to gum disease until yesterday.   Then I started to realize that many customers have told me that have had an autoimmune disease.

Yesterday, a customer called me to tell me that he had read about this connection.

As I mentioned before, I have heard of many other connections to gum disease.

If you have a real reference to any studies on this topic, please do share it in the comment section below.    That would be awesome and will quite possibly benefit others visiting this page.

Cigna Study Shows That Treating Periodontal Disease Leads to Less Emergency Room Visits

Yet another study shows the connection between gum disease and systemic (whole body) health.
The latest one that I read was done by Cigna.  You can read the full article here.

It is really quite amazing when you consider the volume of evidence coming from researchers today.  It seems like every time you turn around, researchers are finding another link between gum disease and some other body problem.

Now, less emergency room visits!  Wow.

So, this is really just a modern day validation of ancient wisdom.   Farmers today still understand the value of checking an animal's mouth before purchase.  They know that the mouth reflects the body.  The wisdom of farm life has taught them that and this knowledge has been passed down in this form for possibly thousands of years!

The mouth reflects the body.

Perhaps one of the biggest objective indicators of the presence of gum disease (periodontal disease) is those periodontal pocket depths.  And this is important for people to know.

Above 3mm = BAD   Below 3mm=Good.

If patients understood this correlation, they would probably be more interested in doing something about their periodontal issues.  Of course, the first step would be to recognize the problem in the first place!  And we know that so many do not.

Doctors and Hygienists often do their best to help the patient understand the problem and what they can do about it.  But the volume of information is just not enough.    The connections are hard to make in a 45 minute to 1 hour visit during which time the patient has their mouth wide open while being talked to (or at) by the clinician or hygienist!

Something that I believe can help is the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator- it is something that is relatively easy to use at home.   It comes with simple instructions.  Most importantly,  as many doctors have been discovering,  it is helping patients to do a better job with oral health at home and they are seeing correspondingly smaller pocketing on subsequent visits!   This is great news!

This one tool, simple in design can make a big difference in patient's lives!

--------

And don't forget about prevention as well.  Many expensive dental procedures could be avoided in the first place, if patient's were more educated about prevention.   My favorite.

Gum Disease Treatment Video

This is a video on the post I wrote earlier entitled:  Gum Disease Treatment.

Here is the video:  (leave your comments and thoughts below)

Here is the link to the full post:

Do not foolishly believe that gum disease is something you should not be concerned about.  The fact is MOST people have some gum disease.   Since it is the leading cause of lost teeth, it is not something you want to fool around with.

Do not join the ranks of people who have lost teeth and had dentures and implants installed and still don't know the reason they lost their teeth was due to gum disease!

As many doctors are fully aware:  Many people are headed for expensive periodontal (gum) treatments and they just don't know it.   Look at the office lobby of any periodontist and you will understand how widespread this problem is.

Gum Disease Treatment

One should definitely be under the care of a periodontist if you know you have gum disease.  My periodontist has been very helpful.

One of the key concepts about gum disease is that it is a daily struggle.  As you have probably heard at sometime in your life:  The daily disruption of plaque is crucial to your success.

You can get this guide:  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy Steps

Since the daily disruption of plaque is important, it stands to reason that you cannot rely solely on your regular periodontal office visits.   As your doctor and hygienist will agree, what you do at home is very, very important.

Gum disease is a big problem today.  A lot of people have it whether they know it or not.   It also happens to be the primary (#1) Cause of tooth loss in this world.

That's a tragedy folks.  In most cases it does not have to be that way.

Periodontal Pockets

The measurements of your periodontal pockets provides your baseline and guage to  know whether what you do at home + your in office visits are working for you.

Generally speaking, you want your periodontal pockets to be 3mm and below.  Generally speaking again,  most dentists will consider your gums healthy when all of your periodontal pockets measure 3 mm or below.

So, for most people shrinking those pockets is going to be the key to success.  Failure to do so, as a corollary, is the key to failure.

I've written a tremendous amount of background information, in easy to understand terms, in the book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease  : A Layman's Guide To Fighting Gum Disease. I suggest you get a copy and read it from cover to cover.   There is a wealth of information in there.

The most powerful tool that I have found, bar none, is this.   And I believe you should get one of them and start using it.  I have posted guidelines in the above free publication,  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy steps.    It's free so you might as well get it and read it, starting today.

Finally, I want to point out that I speak in general terms in all of my information.  And it is important that you are under the care of a skillful and good periodontist.   He can provide advice, diagnosis and treatment for you.

Yet, the above publications and information is very important to you.  As I mentioned before, and your doctor will likely agree, what you do at home is of the utmost importance.  The daily disruption of plaque is the main key to your success.  And since you cannot see your doctor every day - what you do at home, on your own, is crucial.   Again, ask your doctor if you don't believe me.

What You Should Know About Gum Disease

Top Tool For Home Use

Part 31 Video

You can only see your dentist a few times a year.   Most people don't get their teeth cleaned more than 2 to 4 times per year.

However, the struggle against gum disease is a daily one.  Since your dentist can't clean your teeth for you every day,  the bulk of the struggle against gum disease, cavities and bad breath falls on your shoulders.

Since gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, this daily struggle should be taken very seriously.   As you likely already know, the cost of fillings is fairly high.   I can assure you that the cost of dental surgery, gum grafts and implants is much higher.

Don't get stuck with big bills.  Learn what you need to do, beyond regular brushing and flossing, to help protect your dental health and your wallet!

What You Should Know About Gum Disease Part 29

What You Should Know About Gum Disease - Part 29.

In this video we reinforce the concept that plaque is the enemy and that the plaque continues to come back again and again.   It is a fight that must be fought every single day.  Failure to do so, is usually a step backwards.

The plaque is a living 'biofilm' and it forms an oxygen shield.  When this happens the 'bad bacteria' have a chance to reproduce rapidly and produce more and more acidic toxins which can ultimately have the effect of destroying surrounding tissue.

If too much of that tissue, including the bone, is destroyed, the tooth or teeth can become loose.  This is a disaster.  Implants can be very costly.

You can find the book here.

Many people have gum disease right now and many (most)  do not know it.   In fact, there are people who have lost teeth and now have implants and they still don't know or understand that the reason for losing the teeth was gum disease.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.  It is possible to lose teeth through accidents or very severe cavities.  However, gum disease is the far, far in the lead when it comes to tooth loss.

I believe the book is one that every family should have o their book shelf.  Since dental professionals tell us that 3 out of every four or about 75%  of people have gum disease, there is a good chance that you or someone you love will need this information.

If you can save yourself from even one expensive treatment or toot replacement you will be far out in the lead.
