I liked this book a lot. But something bothered me today. Someone said they looked up to Edmond Dantes as a hero, as an inspiration.
For myself, I cannot. This main character of The Count Of Monte Cristo was bent on revenge.
That's not to say the people who wronged him were right. They were actually quite evil.
But revenge is still part of the dark side of human nature. That is why some religions talk about forgiveness.
There is much more to being a good human being than giving up the desire for revenge.
If you would like to read a truly good book that points out how to be a good person and eventually a superior person, you should read the book Zhuan Falun.

I know it is tempting to look towards the Count of Monte Cristo as a hero. But he really reflected the dark side of human nature. No matter how justified that revenge may have seemed.
Be careful of whom you count as a hero!
