.... It's probably a duck.
I'm sure that saying has been around for a very long time. But, the first time I heard it was from a college chemistry professor during lab classes.
We would all do our experiments and hope they turned out right. Then we take our results to the professor.
If everything was wrong, he would say, "You might want to try that again".
If everything was right, he would notice your apprehension and then say: "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck."
What I didn't realize at the time is that principle is actually fairly profound. There are many times when we think to ourselves, "I should have listened to my first instinct".
We can walk down all kinds of crazy, dead end roads in life. Sometimes we know better and we do it anyway.
