Only 5% of Terminally Ill Cancer Patients Understand Prognosis - ABC article says...

This is my commentary on the ABC article about terminally ill cancer patients.  You can read the full article I'm commenting on here:

I guess the most obvious thing to point out, and perhaps encouraging at the same time, is that doctors are not always correct in their predictions.

Everyone has heard a story or two about someone who was predicted to die within a short period of time and yet,  10, 20 or even 40 years later, they are still alive.

Optimism

In addition, people naturally have an optimism bias.   And that optimism bias might be part of the reason that some people can and do defy the odds:

From various sources (pick from your own experiences) , even if they be anecdotal in nature, we have heard time and time again that our thoughts influence our lives.

Dr Bernie Siegel

Dr. Bernie Siegel, a cancer surgeon, spoke and wrote about how he discovered that many times when cancer patients changed the way they look at the world and the way they relate to others, they would often go into remission.

He wrote several books, but one that comes to mind is Love, Medicine and Miracles.

Alternative Therapies

There are also a host of therapies that have not been studied in depth but that you hear people having success with.

I would love to hear about more of these therapies being studied and evaluated by the NIH  (National Institute for Health).

Some of these not yet validated therapies include  intravenous ozone treatments,  intravenous hydrogen peroxide treatments (both of these would be medical grade ozone and H202 and administered by a qualified physician),  and Essiac tea.

There are of course, many others, those are just a few that come to mind.

ABC Article

The ABC article mentioned above does not address prognoses that don't pan out.   It only suggests that patients don't know what they are being told.

Perhaps that is not the case.  Maybe people know full well what they have been told.   Perhaps they are just optimistic that the prognosis could be incorrect!

Cancer is a terrible thing.  It seems reasonable that people would want to explore all of the possible solutions and not just the ones that are limited to radiation and chemotherapy.

There seems to be a shortage of studies on the multitude of other methods that have been utilized in the past.  I hope that changes soon...

I would love to see the NIH validate some of these other therapies.  There could be cheaper, less painful and better outcome solutions than the same-old same old....
