Does Teeth Cleaning Prevent Gum Disease?

Good question.   What kind of teeth cleaning are you referring too?

Do you mean cleaning your teeth at home with a toothbrush and dental floss?

Do you mean a professional cleaning in a periodontist's office?

What Is This Gum Disease Thing?

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in the world today.

Dental professionals tell us that about 75% of people have some gum disease right now!  Isn't that a bummer to hear?

75% if you do the math, translates to about 3 out of every 4 people.

The problem with the question:  Does teeth cleaning prevent gum disease is that it is a one dimensional question.

Some people actually are able to prevent gum disease with regular brushing and flossing.  Remember that 1 out of 4 people doesn't have gum disease or about 25%.

But what about the rest of us?   75% of some right now.  If that is true, then doesn't it mean that regular brushing and flossing may work for some but not most of us?

How Do You Know If You Have Gum Disease?

Simply ask your dentist.  Of course, that may only help you to a degree.

A better question is:  How will my dentist determine if I have gum disease?

One of the most objective measures they have is the measurement of your periodontal pocket depths. Since these are measurements that can be taken and recording it also becomes a method to monitor your situation and your progress or lack thereof!

Remember that!

So, generally speaking, most dentists will agree that your gums are healthy and that you don't have gum disease if your periodontal pocket readings are all at 3mm or less.

This gives you a real objective way to know if you have this problem or not.

What Do You Do If You Do Have Gum Disease?

While your dentist may offer your a variety of in office treatments, there is a problem.

Your dentist can only see and treat you every so often.

Regardless of how fancy and costly the in-office treatments are, the fight against gum disease is a daily one and your dentist cannot give you an expensive laser or deep scaling treatment every day!

Therefore, the burden of this problem really falls on you!

I know this is difficult to accept.  But, read the next section to understand.

The Problem Defined

The bad bacteria that cause gum disease live under plaque.

Plaque is a substance that is constantly forming on your teeth and even beneath the gum line.   Your ability to stop gum disease depends on the daily disruption of plaque.

When the plaque is broken, the bacteria underneath are exposed to oxygen and they simply cannot function.   They need the plaque to shield them from oxygen.

This is why in office treatments may have a powerful effect for the short term.   But, if you are not doing the daily work to seriously disrupt the plaque formation,  there is a strong chance this problem will come back.

This is why what you do at home is the most crucial aspect to protecting yourself against this problem.

Reducing Periodontal Pockets.

If you remember I recently mentioned that it was important to get your periodontal pockets to 3mm or less and keep them there.

Why is that true?   It's because when your pockets are that small, it doesn't allow the build up of bacteria to be great enough to destroy tissue.

Therefore keeping your periodontal pockets at 3mm or less is very important to your dental health.  You simply get your hygienist or dentist to tell you those numbers on every visit.  That's how you keep an eye on things!

What works?

Before I tell you what I have found to be very helpful to get the gums healthy and keep them that way, I have to help you to understand something first.

Every human body is different.   Very few things in this world work 100% of the time for 100% of the people.

That is why you always want to be working with your dentist or periodontist to monitor and track your problem and your pocket depths.

Now I will tell you what has worked for a lot of people.

Personally, the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator (click here to see it) helped me to get my gums healthy again and it helps me to keep them that way.

Using it shrunk my pockets.  The results were verified by my dentist.

Many other people have obtained similar results.  But as I cautioned before, always work with your dentist or periodontist.
