Irrigate thoroughly using the standard jet tip. Instructions for use included with the Hydro Floss oral Irrigator.
Remove the standard jet tip and insert the Pocket Pal tip into the handle. Important - NEVER use the Hydro Floss above the pressure setting #5 when using the Pocket Pal tip.
Fill the reservoir. Turn the Hydro Floss on and adjust the pressure control to a comfortable setting (#5 or lower). Direct the stream to the point where the tooth meets the gumline.
It is important to remove the Pocket Pal tip after each use.
Change the Pocket Pal tip often. It is suggested that the tip be used for no more than 60 days.
They are not to be used 'instead of' but rather ' in addition' to. If you have read my story about the doctor who uses these for preventive reasons, it may make more sense.
Pocket pal jet tips are made specifically for people who have 5 and 6 mm periodontal pockets. Technically speaking, if your pockets are not that deep, you can skip them. But again, there is the story I have of the oral surgeon who uses them on herself for preventive purposes.
Pocket pal tips come with special instructions similar to the sulcus tip special instructions to insure they are safe to use in a specific way.

'Pocket pal' is a fun little phrase, isn't it? On the surface it sounds like pant's pockets doesn't it?
Actually,
it refers to periodontal pockets. So, these little guys are your
friends when it comes to periodontal pocket depths of 5-6 mm or just for
prevention. Pocket Pal Jet Tips
Key Points For Use
A few years ago, a public health worker
told me that he has two friends. One is a periodontist and one is an
oral surgeon. He told me they both use the hydro floss oral irrigator.
He went on to tell me that the oral surgeon uses the pocket pal tips as a preventive measure. I thought that was quite interesting.
The
pocket pal tips are for going a little deeper, they can safely be
angled into the gum tissue. I speak in general terms only here, get
proper directions from your doctor or hygienist before proceeding.
Whereas, the regular jet tips
(which come with your hydrofloss) are not to be used that way.
However, there is an important point here. If you are trying to get the
most out of your hydrofloss, the pocket pal tips are to be used in
addition to (after your regular jet tips) and not 'instead of'.
However,
I suppose if your periodontal pockets are all at 3mm and below, and you
have been able to keep them that way, that last point might not matter
so much to you.
On the other hand, if you are one of
those folks who struggles more to achieve and maintain gum health (as
measured by the periodontal pocket depths), then you might need to pay a
little more attention.
You

dental irrigators here (there is a BIG difference worth knowing about).

Bottom
line is that you don't really need the pocket pals, unless you have
pockets of 5-6 mm OR you are interested in prevention like the oral
surgeon mentioned above. Safety Features
The pocket pals are designed to be used on the number 5 setting on your
Hydro Floss or below. If you go above the 5 setting they may shoot off
your handle. This is because when angling into the gum tissue the
pressure needs to remain at 5 or below to insure that your gum tissues
is well able to tolerate the stream.
With the regular jet tips, you don't have that issue.
