Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth

Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth  -  Dental and Overall Health - Generally Speaking

I want to talk about health in general, not in specifics as that can cause people anxiety or even anger.  Perhaps a little common sense is more reasonable?

There is a saying, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth".   This is an interesting statement and to understand what it means we have to look at the past.

Ancient peoples and even many of today's farmers understand what this means.   Both groups understood that when purchasing or acquiring livestock, you want to check the animal's teeth to make sure the mouth is healthy.

Now, why would that be?   The people of the past and some farmer's today understand that the mouth reflects the health of the body.

They would not choose livestock that demonstrated problems in the mouth.

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" likely meant, if it costs you nothing, you don't have to do the mouth check.

But the underlying principle is the health of the mouth reflects the health of the body - generally speaking.

So, can you influence the health of the body by keeping your mouth healthy?   Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

It's an interesting question.  I can only tell you that researchers of today's world have understood that there is some sort of connection between the health of the gums and a variety of diseases including but not limited to heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and more.

There is the possibility that if we would just keep our mouths healthier, we MIGHT be able to influence the health of our bodies.

The HydroFloss is one of the most powerful tools in my personal arsenal for helping to keep my gums and teeth healthy.

Just some thoughts to ponder - in general terms.

Please stay healthy and well,

I Am So Happy To Once Again Have Access to A Hydro Floss - Customer Review

Read this:

http://www.toothygrinsstore.com/HydroFloss-p/hydrofloss01.htm

Getting a Hydro Floss is one of the best things you can do for yourself, a friend or a loved one.

Many people have no idea what these things can do and how much they can save a person.   "Prevention is worth a pound of cure",  they say.

What's the cost of a lost tooth?

What's the cost of dental implants?

What's the cost of laser gum surgery?

What is the cost of a gum graft?

What is the cost of a 'deep cleaning' procedure.

What is the cost of dentures?

What is the cost of cavities?

How much pain does all or some of that add up to?

I can not guarantee that you will avoid all of these things.   But, what if you were one step closer?

This is a fork in the road for you.   Which path are you going to walk down?

The person in the review above sure is happy about the path they took...

Sincerely,

Excellent Dental Health Over The Years

This customer said the device has served them well:

The device the reviewer is referring to is this one.

Dental health is a precious thing and it is not something that we should trifle with.  Expensive treatments are not fun, both financially and with regards to the pain factor.

Dental work generally does not last forever either.  At some point it may need to be 'redone' adding to the cost, time and suffering.

Prevention on the other hand, may be able to free you from some of that burden.   Would it be worth it to save thousands on your dental health over the next decade?

I think it would.  You can tell me if I'm wrong about that.

Read this now and let me know what you think.

years of better dental health?

Dr. Cardenas Andres Reminds Us That Drinking Water Is Good For Our Teeth!

It appears that staying well hydrated has an impact on your teeth as  well as the rest of your body.

Dr. Andres helps us to remember that.  You can get to what he wrote by clicking here:

https://plus.google.com/100136532129036616422/posts/JDTUNATc6Zu

I remember reading about a book called The Water Cure.   It was about an Iranian doctor who had been imprisoned and while incarcerated he discovered how water was able to help stop or alleviate a lot of ailments.

It is a quite interesting book.

So, now we are reminded by Dr. Andres that water is also good for the teeth.

They say we are 70% water, so that makes sense.

Drink more water and help to protect and preserve your dental health.  Thanks to Dr. Andres for the reminder.

Are Dental X-Rays Dangerous?

One of our community members, posted this about x-rays and their dangers.

You'll see the comments I made there as well.

Do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

X-rays are a diagnostic tool that virtually every dentist will definitely say they need.

There is little doubt that they are important.    It allows them to see what is going on 'under the surface' - at least a little better.

So, don't be too harsh on your dentist about x-rays.

On the other hand, I once met an X-ray tech who developed cancer.       I just don't want you to think I am making everything sound rosy.

Their is virtually no way to know if that tech's cancer was influenced by his profession or not.   I know that.

Just throwing that out there.

Are Cranberries Good For Your Teeth?

Dr.  Bruce has published a post about cranberries and other foods that are good for you teeth.   You might want to consider joining the free dental health community while you are there.

Sometimes it is great to learn new tips for dental health.  Often times, they are things you already knew, but had forgotten.  Therefore, it is great to have reminders.

Dental health is very important.  We generally get one set of adult teeth and we need to protect them along with the health of our gums as best we can.

The pain of dental health problems is not fun!  I think most, if not all, of us know that.   The expense that comes with these problems is also know fun.   The other day, someone told me they had $50,000 worth of implants.

Wow!  Prevention does pay.   And we all know it.  It is one of those little secrets that many of us have forgotten!    It pays to refocus sometimes.

Should You Get A Root Canal?

You'll want to discuss this with your dentist in detail, of course.

Here are some things to keep in mind.

1. You have a right to a second, third, fourth or more opinions from other dentists.  And opinions can vary widely!  So keep that in mind.

2.  A root canal essentially means the tooth will be dead.   This will often cause the tooth to turn brown and necessitate a crown.

3. Crown work may not last forever and may need to be done again at some point.  The same is true for fillings as well.

4.  If there is any possibility of saving that tooth, you may want to look for a doctor who will help you to do that.

5.  You can check out a book on root canals here.    Information is power.  Making a good decision is based on good information.

I hope you found this useful.  If so, please sound off in the comment section below.

He's Had $50,000 Worth of Implants

- That's what someone just told me on a chat.

I would guess that you would not want that experience if you had a way to avoid it.

A little prevention can really save.

Prevention can potentially save and protect your own dental health along with the dental health of those you love.

Let's not even mention the cost and expense that goes with dental helath problems.

Think about it carefully.

A Precious Christmas Gift

Giving the gift of better dental health is giving a precious gift.

Many people have found better dental health through the use of this.

I'd say that if you are interested in possibly protecting someone you love from expensive dental bills and lost teeth, this could be exactly what you want and they need.

This really is a gift that keeps on giving.   For a small price you could help someone you love or care about to avoid thousands in dental health bills over a few decades or a lifetime.

The cost of a single dental implant in the US is usually over $2000.  How many teeth does a person have?

A deep cleaning or scaling and root planing treatment costs around $1500 on average.   How many will a person need over a lifetime?

Think of the savings that are possible. Caring and  Love takes many forms.

Dental Ignorance

"What You Don't Know CAN Hurt You"  - Dental Ignorance

I was once told by a doctor that 'prevention doesn't pay'.    He knows about my book:  What You Should Know About Gum Disease.    And that is what he told me.  He meant:  You can't make any money by helping people to prevent things.

And as it turns out, he is right.   People aren't going to listen until they are facing a crisis.  And even then, they often aren't going to listen.   Instead they will spend thousands for solutions that are only short term.

Someone else said, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."   Same idea.

I learned or found some understandings about dental health that the masses really need to know and understand.   The problem is:  Very few people listen to me.

When 75% of people have some gum disease right now, you might think it would be a no brainer that they would all want to read my book.   But it really doesn't work that way.

Instead, they are going to be told they need expensive dental treatments.  They are going to shell out thousands of dollars only to find that they will have to shell out more thousands one year to three years later because the underlying situation was only temporarily addressed.

They don't realize that the prevention of these problems is a daily issue.   No treatments are going to solve the fundamental problems because it is a daily issue.  Only you can work on your own mouth on a daily basis.

Brushing and flossing works to a degree.  But when 75% of people still have gum disease, it SHOULD be easy to realize that often times more is needed.  For most people, regular brushing and flossing, while important, are not enough to stop this problem.

As humans, we really look at things in a strange way, don't we?

Here is an analogy.   You NEVER change the oil in your car.  You go to the mechanic once every two years to get your engine changed because it has been destroyed from the lack of maintenance.  The mechanic gladly charges you thousands to replace your engine.   And will be able to do it again in two years.

All the while he knows that if you would just change your oil, everything would be great.   But even though he might mention it in passing to ease his conscience, you never get the concept.

And every couple of years you keep buying a new engine.

There is only one problem with this analogy.  It's just a car.   Once you lose a tooth, what are you going to do?   Spend more money on an implant or dentures?    There is no substitute for a good tooth.   It's not like an engine where you can just put a new one in every couple of years.

Sadly,  this blog post is not even going to make a dent.   Few people will read it and even fewer will "get it".

That doctor was right,  "Prevention doesn't pay".    But it does pay someone, it pays the patient.   Prevention pays the patient,  but most will not listen -even after it is too late.     What a strange world we live in.

Are you just like everyone else?   Let me know in the comments below.

A Healthy Mouth Reflects A Healthy Body

Click "Like" If you Agree:

healthy mouth, healthy body

When the health of your mouth fails, your body may be more vulnerable.  Why might this be true?

Think about the wisdom of farmers.  They know that they should not buy livestock that has unhealthy teeth.

The reflection is something that doctors have noted for a very long time.

Your gum tissue should remain healthy.  When you have a high bacterial load in your mouth, it is easy to see how bacteria could easily find their way into the blood stream.

Maybe that is why they are finding p.gingivalis ( a gum disease causing bacteria) in the artery plaque of the heart!   Gum disease may not only be the number one cause of tooth loss, it may also have a lot to do with your heart health!

Researchers have noted for some time the connection between gum disease and many body diseases.  They may not fully understand or be able to explain the connections, but they have noted them for quite some time.

How Do You Keep Your Gums Healthy?

This can be a tricky subject.  What works for one person may not work for another.  The bottom line is that the amount of work that you put into it, is going to depend on what you, personally, need.

For some people, normal brushing and flossing is all they need.   For others, they need to spend a lot of time every day to maintain healthy gums and teeth.

There are a few factors involved.  Genetics, type of bacteria, diet, immune deficiencies and access to quality care are just a few items that factor into the equation.

You should want to level the playing field.

I wrote a short guide called:  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy steps.   You can get it here, right now,  at no monetary cost.

Gum Disease Is Evil

It really is.  It has the power to rob people of their teeth.

You should always ask your dentist what your periodontal pocket depths are on every office visit.  They can check them in a few minutes and it generally doesn't cost anything extra.   You want to keep an eye on these numbers at all times.

Generally speaking, most dental professionals will consider your gums healthy if all of your pockets are 3mm or less.    Generally speaking again,  they will consider them unhealthy if you have numbers above 4mm.

Sometimes, they will suggest that you get a 'deep cleaning'  or 'Scaling and Root Planing' treatment done.  The draw back is that they are generally expensive, more invasive than regular cleanings and they often have to be done again in 1-3 years or so.

Some literature points to the suspicion that these types of treatments can contribute to gum recession as well.  So be careful.   If you are not sure about what your dentist is telling you, you can always go to another dentist and get a second or third opinion.

Many people have had good luck reducing their periodontal pockets - as measured by their hygienist or dentist - with the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator.

Whatever You Do, Consider Doing Something!

If you already know that your gums are in a diseased state, don't let them stay that way.  Start taking action to reduce those pockets as soon as possible.  Your dentists knows that at best they can only clean your teeth 3 or 4 times per year.

However, the fight against gum disease is a daily one.  You must disrupt that plaque daily in order to keep the 'bad bacteria' from growing to large enough numbers to cause damage.   When your pockets are deeper, these 'bad bacteria' have room to expand and cause more damage to your teeth and gums with their acidic secretions.

That doesn't sound like fun, does it?

Always be under the care of a doctor.   But, also educate yourself about what you can do at home to tip the odds in your favor! Then verify your results on the next office visit with those periodontal pocket depth numbers.
