Are Cranberries Good For Your Teeth?

Dr.  Bruce has published a post about cranberries and other foods that are good for you teeth.   You might want to consider joining the free dental health community while you are there.

Sometimes it is great to learn new tips for dental health.  Often times, they are things you already knew, but had forgotten.  Therefore, it is great to have reminders.

Dental health is very important.  We generally get one set of adult teeth and we need to protect them along with the health of our gums as best we can.

The pain of dental health problems is not fun!  I think most, if not all, of us know that.   The expense that comes with these problems is also know fun.   The other day, someone told me they had $50,000 worth of implants.

Wow!  Prevention does pay.   And we all know it.  It is one of those little secrets that many of us have forgotten!    It pays to refocus sometimes.

Love Your Dental Hygienist - Video

Really, I think it is true.  Dental Hygienists are the unsung heroes.  Theirs is often a thankless job.  Yet, what they do is vitally important to your ongoing dental health.

If you know a hygienist, please consider taking a moment to call him or her to let them know that you appreciate them for what they do!   Too shy to do that?   Then, you can just email this page to them and let the video tell him or her for you1

Does Oil Pulling Actually Do Anything Positive?

Does Oil Pulling Actually Do Anything Positive?

You are certainly welcome to share your thoughts on oil pulling in the comment section below.

I have mixed feelings about oil pulling.   Mainly, when I experimented with it, It seemed to induce bleeding in a gum region that was previously not bleeding.

It could be that it was the kind of oil I was using.

Yet, I hear many people say that oil pulling is great.    But, what is it great for?   Does it really make your dental health,  in particular your periodontal health better?

I think the real measure of that would be through before and after periodontal pocket depth readings as taken by a registered hygienist or dentist.

Since, I had my own negative experience with oil pulling, I'm pretty skeptical.

Does anyone have information to add about oil pulling?  It can be your own experience or the experiences of someone you personally know.

If you have any real objective (or even good subjective) information or insight to share, use the comment section below.

Trying To Give Up Coffee - Like Me?

You bet I'm trying to give up coffee and I've gone about 1 1/2 weeks without it.    Looks like I motivated myself partially with this post on coffee.

The other part of the motivation came from an upcoming dental appointment.  I wanted to give my teeth a chance to heal any holes (beginning of cavities) that might have been brewing.

You don't want to give a dentist the excuse to drill and fill.  Some will not do so easily, but others will!  (That's a tip regarding how to find a good dentist -btw).

So, anyway, I must of had enough time to reverse any acid damage that had been occurring, because I didn't have any cavities on this recent trip.

I think a lot of that also has to do with the Hydro Floss which I use daily and does a lot to reduce the amount of plaque and tartar buildup between dental cleanings.

I know that coffee is a mainstream drink and some people drink it all day long.   For this reason, I suggest balancing your mouth pH after drinking every cup!

Dental health is elusive for a lot of people.  Acid helps cavities, bad breath and gum disease develop.

The strange aspect of this is that the 'bad' bacteria love acid.  It also ends up being a byproduct of their anaerobic metabolism.   That's a fancy way of saying their waste is acidic.   The bacteria that use aerobic metabolism are usually not harmful to our dental health.

Since increasing the acid levels (and decreasing) pH helps that bad bacteria multiply more rapidly, it follows that raising the pH would be something they would not like.

Not many mouthwashes are pH balanced but this one is.

Sincerely,

Tooth Decay Is On The Rise In Preschoolers

I found an article about tooth decay in preschoolers here.

On the surface, this premise sounds like this is a 'new' phenomenon.  But, I suspect that this has been the case for quite a long time.   Juices and milk are full of sugars and we all know that sugar will feed tooth decay causing bacteria.

These bacteria then produce acidic waste byproducts.  These acids are what cause the creation of cavities.   More sugar leads to more bacterial growth and so forth and so on.

A Tip

Here is an idea.  Try getting xylitol tooth gel and rubbing it on the children's teeth at night.  Xylitol is also a sugar, but it is one that the bacteria cannot use.  They end up starving and dying.  These gels can sometimes be found in health food stores.   Read the label directions carefully before use.

Toothy Decay Problem

It's not a surprise that tooth problems are 'on the rise'.  They have been rampant' for a long time and not just in children either.  Consider how large the dental health industry is.   That should tell you all you need to know.

Tooth decay and other dental health problems occur frequently.  People are always being treated for them.   The treatment of dental disease must be a multi-billion dollar industry.   I guess that it could possibly be a trillion dollar industry.

It is frightening when you think about it.   Focusing on prevention is the best way to try and protect yourself and your family.  Knowledge is power.

This is my dental health prevention message for the day!

Ötzi The Iceman Could Have Used a Dentist - He Had Gum Disease Too

I read an article from Science NBC News     ---  (Article was pointed out to me by one Ekhym Wethered of Overland Park, KS - Thanks Ekhym!)

Looks like our 5,000 year old well preserved ice man lived a decent life (until he was shot with an arrow that is) but had some bad dental problems.

One item in particular that piqued my interest was that Ötzi had gum disease.   The article went on to mention that Ötzi probably would have lost some teeth within the next five years - had he continued living.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.  Although Ötzi can also attribute his problems to a milled grain diet (such as worn teeth). It is common knowledge today that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

Some people lose one or more teeth get implants or dentures and somehow missed the whole point that their tooth loss was due to gum disease!  They still don't know it.

Too bad they didn't visit Toothy Grins Store because we talk about this topic a lot.   Of course, back in Ötzi's day Toothy Grins Store didn't exist.  But fortunately for modern man, it does!

Don't suffer the same fate as our neolithic ice man!  Make and keep your gums healthy!

Why Coffee Is Bad For Your Teeth

Coffee is bad for your teeth for two reasons.   Both reasons stem from the fact that coffee is very acidic.

Reason 1:  Acid directly attacks your tooth enamel.  This can leave you susceptible to cavities as well as cracked and broken teeth.

Reason 2.  Acid is the 'bad bacteria's'  best friend!  They love the acid. It makes them multiply even more rapidly!   These 'bad bacteria' are the anaerobic ones.  These are the kind that are responsible for cavities, gum disease and even bad breath!

Think about the daily routine of most people.   Do they take any steps at all to clear their mouths of the acid after drinking a cup of coffee?   Most people never think of this.    If they had a good pH balanced mouthwash, it could be to their benefit.   Even swishing with water is better than nothing!  (but some water is acidic too - but not as acidic as the coffee!)

Most people take no precautions at all!  And a few hours later, they are drinking more coffee or soda.  In most cases, the soda is just as acidic if not more than the coffee!

In light of that, does it surprise you that so many people have cavities and broken or cracked teeth?

I hope this post will help you to think about these things a little more.  In addition many other beverages and foods are acidic.  Do your homework and you could save yourself a lot of heartache!

One test to help.  You can do a pH test on your saliva before / after drinking coffee and before / after using a pH balanced mouthwash.    You can sometimes find pH testing strips at your local pharmacy (NEVER put those strips in your mouth though).  Follow all directions and warnings on the package before using pH testing strips.

Oklahoma Oral Surgeon's Patients Sent Warning About Possible HIV or Other Infections

I read this article in the Seattle Times

Inspector's found improper procedures, improper sterilization protocols, rusty instruments and staff not authorized to administer sedation IVs, among other problems at an Oral Surgeon's Office in Oklahoma.

Frightening!

Letter's were sent out to about 7,000 patients urging them to be tested for HIV.

Please Be Careful

If you are a dental health professional, please be ever so careful about these 'little details'.  It is not fair to your patients to use rusted instruments, improper sterilization protocols or to reuse drug vials.

Patients deserve the best care.   I am sure they are paying for the best.

I do not know what to say about this type of thing.  It is horrible.  I hope that it doesn't happen very often as one expert suggested.

Patient Safety Should Come First.

--------

And don't forget about prevention as well.  Many expensive dental procedures could be avoided in the first place, if patient's were more educated about prevention.   My favorite.

Bill To Upgrade Hygienists' Licensure in The State of Main

Here is the story link to Press Herald

This is a very interesting development.  The article says there is a shortage in 15 counties in Maine and that 55% of children lack access to dental care.

Wow, that's a shocker.  No wonder they want to do something about that.   If you are a dental hygienist, this might be a good time to consider relocation.

I wish the story specified exactly what the newly empowered hygienists' scope of work will be.  But there was no mention of that.   It is also doesn't tell us if there will be additional training offered to those hygienists.

The bill is being sponsored by Mark Eves (House Speaker)  and Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio ( a former dental hygienist)

I wonder what it is about Maine that they have a shortage of dentists?   If you understand the situation and have commentary, please provide it in the comment section below.

The Hydro Floss Removes Fear At The Dentists Office?

Many people fear going to the dentist.  They might fear the expense when problems are found.  Or, they might fear the pain that goes along with fixing dental health problems.

In either case, It is safe to assume that most people would like to go to the dentist and have a great check up and not have be afraid.

Can the Hydro Floss help in this regard?

Many of my customers are very happy.   Gum disease is a big problem.   When you are able to reduce your periodontal pocket depths - as measured at your next checkup by your dentist or hygienist, you might be a happier camper!

The real idea behind improving and / or  maintaining dental health is your ability to reduce the plaque and tartar buildup between your regular dental cleanings.

You can ask your hygienist or dentist yourself, the will most likely agree that reducing that plaque and tartar is YOUR KEY to less dental health problems.

Imagine going to your regular checkups and having NO FEAR,  NO PAIN and NO Extra expenses.

You tell me,  would that be worth it?

Downey California Dentist, Michael C Duncker Now Offering LANAP Procedure To Patients

Dr.  Duncker is now offering LANAP treatment to his patients.

You can read the full story here.

Congratulations to Dr. Duncker on becoming certified to perform this procedure!

Hopefully Dr. Duncker fully supports prevention and his educating his patients so that they may never need this procedure done.

A good dentist will certainly report to his patients the depth of their periodontal pockets on every office visit.   This is a key indicator in the diagnosis of gum disease.

You will know when you are in danger with these numbers, so it is important that your hygienist or dentist tell you what these numbers are.  You don't want to be surprised by an expensive treatment, do you?

If you dentist's office is currently providing these numbers to you, be sure to ask them on every visit.  By staying on top of the problem of gum disease, you can avoid a lot of expensive hassles down the road.

The cost of dental surgery in the US, as I am sure you are probably aware or can guess, is quite high.  If you can manage to keep your gums healthy through prevention you can save yourself a lot of money over the remaining  decades / years of your life.

Sincerely,

Is Drinking Coffee Bad For Your Teeth? Video

This video is about an earlier post entitled:  Is Drinking Coffee Bad For Your Teeth?

Coffee is a very acidic beverage.  You can try to cut down on that by adding milk.  But, at the end of the day, it is acidic.  For that reason alone, it is not good for your teeth.
However, no one is saying that you cannot drink coffee.  Just make a little effort to rebalance the pH of your mouth after drinking a cup.

Conservative Gum Disease Treatment Helps Patient Avoid Surgery

You can read the article I am referring to here.

A St. Louis doctor and his hygienist were able to stop the progression of gum disease and help a patient avoid surgery who, under normal circumstances, would typically be referred for surgery.

This is, of course, a good thing.

Education is Really The Key

The article went on to say that 1/2 of all people have gum disease.  However, many professionals put the number far higher.

The article correctly states that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.   The problem is one of education and prevention.

If people understood that they can have more control over their dental health by disrupting that plaque on a daily basis,  they would most likely have a lot less problems and smaller dental health bills in the future.

I spoke to a woman recently that only gets her teeth cleaned once every five years.  I was a tiny bit surprised.  This person cited the high cost of dental care as the reason she only gets the cleaning once every 5 years.

The problem is that this 'cleaning' ends up being the more expensive 'deep cleaning'.    We certainly cannot fault someone for wanting to save money.   But, wouldn't it be wonderful if the costs of regular cleanings could be brought down to the point that people would feel good about getting their teeth cleaned at least twice-per-year?

I know that is wishful thinking, you don't have to tell me.   Dental hygienists are the unsung heroes of dental care.  They get in their and really clean things out for the patient.   It is just too bad that many patients seem to be unable to keep the plaque and tartar buildup between office visits to a minimum.

Could education and a focus on effective prevention tools and techniques help reduce the problems?   I personally like the Hydro Floss.  Many dentists and hygienists have found that it can really help their patients do a better job at home.

I am glad that the dentist and hygienist were able to save at least one of their patients from invasive treatments.  Wouldn't it be great if more could be saved from that in a cost effective and simple way?

Sincerely,

David Snape

Should You Use An Electric Toothbrush?

Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes can be more effective.  Let's think about why that may be true.

One of the major reasons I think this is helpful is because of the timers that most electrics have.
You see, it has been suggested that each time we brush we should brush for about 2 minutes.

Two minutes is actually a long time.   It doesn't seem like it, but it is.   Therefore, most of us actually brush far less, even though we think it is more in our minds.

You can test this by timing yourself.  If you are not used to brushing for a full 2 minutes you will quickly realize it when you are using a timer.  You will think it is 'taking forever'.

The point of brushing your teeth is to manually disrupt plaque.  This is very important.  The circular electronic motion of the  brushing or sonic action for some brushes, may do a better job of that than manually brushing.

However, if you are truly taking your time and doing a good job with a manual brush, you could conceivable also be effective.

The time is one of the biggest factors.  This is where many fall short.   The timer on an electric can help to keep you on track.
