Implantologist Gets A Hydro Floss For Personal Use

 I spoke to an Implantologist today who was buying a HydroFloss for personal use.

She said that she has been familiar with the Hydro Floss for a long time.  They would put each new implant patient on a Hydro Floss. [The hydrofloss is not limited to use for implant patients]

Anything above 3mms, generally speaking, is considered to be bad.   Let's say, for example, that you have some 4s , a couple of 5s and one 6mm pockets.

Hydro Floss - Why Are There Different Tips For The HydroFloss?

That's A Great Question! 

There are different kinds of HydroFloss tips designed for different depths of periodontal pockets.

A periodontal pocket is determined by the measurement of how far a probe can be slid between a tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. Generally speaking, 3mm and below is considered healthy - above is genereally considered unhealthy.  These measurements are to be taken by your hygienist or dentist. 

If someone has 5-6mm pockets they may wish to have the special tips for those depths.

If someone has 8-10 mm pockets, there are special tips for that as well.


Your Periodontal Pocket Goal

The end goal is to bring the pocketing down to 3mm or below around all teeth - as measured by your dentist or hygienist.   At that point and generally speaking most dentists will consider your gums to be healthy.

This means there should not be further tissue damage / erosion due to gum disease (providing the 3mm or below is maintained).  Oh - and you probably get to keep (the rest of) your teeth at that point as well.

Gum disease is the number one reason people lose their teeth. Most dental professionals will tell you that about 3 out of every 4 people have gum disease right now. It is only a matter of time as the disease progresses until the person finds out.   People typically won't know it until told by a professional or the damage gets so bad (receding gums and loose teeth) that they can see it for themselves.

 Most people have gum disease and it is only a matter of time before they are told by their dentist that they have it. This is usually done when it is time for an expensive treatment. I wrote a book for everyone called : What You Should Know About Gum Disease - A Layman's Guide To Fighting Gum Disease.  

This is not just a book for when you find out you have this problem.  It can also help you understand this problem before it becomes bad enough that you are told about it.   And  you may be able to stop it from getting to a point where you need an expensive treatment. 


In short - If 3 out of every 4 people have some gum disease right now (if we are to believe our dental professionals) - then EVERY family needs this book.   And even if you are an individual, chances are high that you need the information in this book as well.

How Easy Is It To Use A HydroFloss?

Answer:  It is relatively easy to use one.   The best practice is to use a HydroFloss  twice per day with two full reservoirs per use.

What is a reservoir?  It is the place where you put the water.  (See picture)

Four reservoirs per day?  That sounds like a lot?   No, it is not.  At the full setting of the hydrofloss (number 9)  you can drain a full tank in approximately 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

 Therefore, you can drain all four reservoirs in under 10 minutes per day.

Cleaning instructions and other information come with your HydroFloss - but the tip to use four reservoirs per day does not.    Instead, they only mention that you should use 2 reservoirs per use.  Therefore, you are receiving good information for your time spent here.

Many people have achieved good results - as measured by licensed dentist and hygienists.

How do they measure these results?    They take the measurement of your periodontal pocket depths.   3mm and below is considered healthy.  Above 3mm, generally speaking is considered to be 'unhealthy'.

So, you take people who do not have a hydrofloss, measure their depths and then have them use the Hydro Floss properly for 1-2 months.  Then you have a dentist or hygienist take those measurements again.  Many people that previously had 4mm, 5mm or even greater pockets are seeing reductions in those depths.

If you can get all of  your periodontal pocket depths to 3mm and below - as measured by a professional, generally speaking, they will believe your gums to be healthy at this point.

Why are health gums important? 

Gum disease currently affects up to 75% of the population - according to many dental professionals.  Most have no idea they have gum disease.   Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

This is another reason why it is important for you to know and understand the concept of periodontal pockets depths and what is healthy and what is not.

No treatment or remedy in this world will work 100% of the time for 100% of the people.  That is just impossible.  However, besides my personal experience and results, many others have also achieved good results from the Hydro Floss.

The Story Behind The HydroFloss

This is the true story of the Hydro Floss and how it came into existence.   The original person who invented the machine is no longer involved in the manufacture and distribution of it.   

But, that doesn't change the fact that lots of people have found tremendous benefit from using it.   One implantologist told me that when he was being trained, he was told that every patient with a dental implant should have one.

Will The Hydro Floss Work For You?

Ultimately, there is no real way to know for sure.   This is because every single human body is different and every person is in a different situation.  There is no way to say that any one thing will work 100% of the time for everyone.   That would be impossible!

However, here is a way to tell if the Hydro Floss will work for you.  You will need the measurements of the periodontal pocket depths that are given to you (or should be) at every dental office cleaning.  You are going at least twice per year to get your teeth cleaned, right?

So, you take those numbers as your baseline.  Let's say for example you have a bunch of 4mm pockets, a few 5s and maybe a 6.

You use the HydroFloss twice per day with 2 reservoirs per use.   That's a total of 4 reservoirs per day.

Then,  on your next regularly scheduled dental appointment you can ask them to measure you again.   If the numbers have become smaller, that could be a sign that the Hydro Floss worked for you.
It worked for me personally.  But you can't go by my personal experience because every human body is different.

You see, generally speaking, most dental professionals will say that your gums are healthy if your periodontal pocket depth numbers are at 3mm and below.   Likewise, most professionals will consider your gums to be unhealthy if you have pocketing greater than 3mm.

Dentist Orders Hydro Floss for Himself

I just took a phone order for a Hydro Floss.  The dentist ordering it wanted one for his other house.  He was kind and good natured and we had a very pleasant conversation.

HydroFloss Troubleshooting Tips

One of the most common  (but still not very often) problems people call me about is the flow.  They notice that their HydroFloss "seems" to lose pressure over time.

Often times, this is actually not the case.   There are a few things you should try before giving up.

One is, believe it or not, to simply change the tip.   I have witnessed for myself that if you do not change the tip regularly enough,  it appears that the flow has slowed down.

But, this is not actually the case.  The tips do wear down.  They give a little and they are intentionally made a little soft for safety reasons.  

So, try changing your tip.  You can get regular jet tips (packages of four) -- here. 

I suggested this to one customer who was ready to buy a new pump for his Hydro Floss.  He called me back a few minutes later to tell me that changing the tip worked.

I have noticed the same thing.  If I wait to long before changing my regular tips, it appears that the Hydro Floss has slowed down.   But, as soon as I replace the tip, it is as strong as ever.

The wear on the tip changes the dynamics of the water flow somehow.  This is the best explanation I have.   But I do know that changing the tip has worked for me!

Tip:  your Hydro Floss should drain an entire tank in approximately 2 minutes and 10 seconds on the highest pressure setting.
