Most of the products on the market today are lacking two important factors when it comes to stopping bad breath.    

This is because their focus is not on stopping or reducing the actual cause of bad breath.  Instead, the focus is on covering a smell.   

When this approach is taken the results are not always great and they certainly don't last long.   

The right products will have a focus on pH balance and oxygenation.   If they don't have those factors, it's just not going to be as effective  

The reason why comes down to simple facts about microbiology.   The 'bad' bacteria that cause bad breath are mostly anaerobic in nature.   

That just means they don't like oxygen.   When you give them too much oxygen, they tend to either die or revert to a form of metabolism that is not 'harmful' (some bacteria can do this).   

So oxygen is a key to reducing the problem from its root.    

pH balance.  The same 'bad bacteria don't like higher pH.   

The bacteria that are oxygen hating also love acid.  In fact, their waste products are acidic in nature.  But when you give them a more basic environment, they don't do as well. 

Give them more acid and they reproduce more rapidly.

Cause

Volatile Sulfur Compound Producing Bacteria - That's the reason.  These bacteria are the ones directly responsible for bad breath. 

Control is the answer.  You will never get rid of all of them.  But you can aim to control the population and make your mouth an environment they don't want to live in.   

Problem Origins

There are a number or factors that contribute to the problem.   We may not be able to change all the factors but perhaps we can influence them. 

One factor is the kind of bacteria that inhabit your mouth.  When we are born is babies we actually don't have bacteria in our mouths.  

Our first bacteria come from our parents or care givers.  That's one factor. 

Another factor is the structure of the tongue you have.   Certain kinds of tongues, with deep grooves and fissures, lend themselves to providing great hiding and growing places for the wrong bacteria.  

What we eat has an impact too.  Obviously, foods like onions and garlic already have sulfur smelling compounds, but that isn't what I mean necessarily. 

You see, pH balance has a lot to do with this.  If you are eating acidic foods and drinking acidic beverages you are giving the bacteria fuel to grow.  They love an acidic environment.  

Many foods that are acidic are also loaded with sugar.  This is food for the bacteria. 

Methods Of Control  

There are two important factors to controlling those bacterial populations.  If you can keep the populations down to a minimum you can prevent them from reaching sufficient levels to give you noticeable bad breath. 

 Ph balance is one.   As mentioned above, acid is their friend.  Alkalinity is the opposite.  It tends to slow them down and retard the population growth. 

Oxygen is the next.   Oxygen is the bane of many of these sulfur compound producing bacteria.  It kills them reducing the population and the number of members who are actively reproducing.  

 These factors can help you to control those populations and reduce bad breath - possibly to the point that it is no longer noticeable.  

 These products contain oxygenated and pH balanced items.

You don't have to go beyond the number of times you have caught a wiff of someone elses' bad breath to know that this is a fairly common problem.

There is a certain information product that I bought on stopping bad breath.   I've purchased it and read it. 

Aside from the fact that I don't agree with some of the methods utilized in it,  there is a FREE resource that is longer with more information.    (see to the left)

I won't name what the other book is called, because that would not be very nice to the author.  And I don't want to say bad things about anyone or their work (under normal circumstances).

Instead, let me tell you about the free resource I do favor. 

It has quite a few pages.  It was written by someone who is both a dentist and has been trained in bacteriology.  That's an advantage over other 'experts' because I argue, he has a better understanding of the little critters that cause bad breath!

What Is Meridol Toothpaste?

I saw an add regarding Meridol and Halitosis (bad breath) and I was curious.  

So, I did a little checking.   It looks like Meridol is a toothpaste that contains two different kinds of fluoride.

Amine fluoride

Stannous Fluoride

Of course, there are many opinions about fluoride.  Some people favor it while others abhor it.
