I Bet You Ticked A Lot Of People Off When You Wrote That

Connection Between Oral Bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum and Colorectal Cancer Uncovered

Research was performed by Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

Oral Bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum

You can read about this news here.

Of course, more work will need to be done to validate this connection as well as what might be done about it.

However, this is just one more indicator of how important your dental health  and how it correlates to the rest of your body.

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy and clean is very important.

Connection Between Oral Bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum and Colorectal Cancer Uncovered
This is true not only to protect your teeth and gums, avoid tooth loss and prevent expensive treatments, but also for the rest of your body.

Researchers have found connections between dental disease and cancer, lung infections, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and a host of other diseases.

They have been noticing these connections for years, no decades.  But, it is still hard to understand the mechanisms behind these.

Nothing New About This

Ancient wisdom showed us the same truth.   For example, aren't farmers always checking the health of animals before they purchase them?  Don't they always look in the mouth?    The concept is that an animal with an unhealthy mouth probably has other problems too.

That's where that saying,  "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth". Comes from.

You see, your dental health is vitally important to the rest of the body's health and to your longevity as well.   Does this mean that you need great dental health to live longer?

Your Dental Health Should Be A Priority

is your dental health a priority? It should be. I mean that in a nice way, I really do.   So many people are busy with their lives.  They don't often take time to think about their dental health and how it is really a reflection of the body's health.

Both ancient wisdom and modern science agree.  An unhealthy mouth is often a reflection of an unhealthy body.

In Ancient days, and probably still today, farmers always look at an animals mouth before purchasing it.  They intuitively understood that a sick mouth meant there was probably a sick body there too.

Modern researchers continue to discover connections between gum disease (which most people have at least a little of) and many other diseases, including heart disease and stroke.   Both old wisdom and modern science agree on this point.

I know you get tired of hearing all those people harp on you about dental health.  I used to hate that too.   And I have OFTEN thought they had ulterior motives.  They very well may.

But, that doesn't really change the truth about the connections that exist.

It does pay to prevent dental health problems.

Take it from someone who doesn't stand to gain thousands up thousands of dollars, your dental health is important!

Take it from someone, who was trying his best to avoid an expensive treatment.
I was able to do so, because I developed some knowledge and I found the right tool.

Part of my success at avoiding expensive treatment was from knowledge and understanding.  I put that in the book : What You Should Know About Gum Disease.

Another part of my success was due to finding the right tool to do the job I needed done.  That tool is what I call the Best Flosser.

And now, I have shared these resources with you.   Even though I have done that, I know you may not listen to me.   Let's face it, most people are intent on following the mainstream.  They will go ahead and go for the Scaling and Root Planing Treatment or the Gum Grafts or the other surgeries that will be both costly and require some recovery.

They will spend a lot of money on expensive treatments.  Those are the same treatments that a wise person can learn to prevent.   You know what many doctors say?   "Prevention doesn't pay."  A doctor told me that when I told him about my book.    Isn't that telling?   I think it is.

I can tell you that prevention does pay.   It pays the patient.  And it can pay off big time in savings and hassles in the future.

prevent dental health problems and save money later.

I have an experience to share.  Not just mine either.  I have a story to tell.  If you want to hear that story, give me a call.   1-888-586-6849.    There is no obligation or anything like that.  But maybe I have information that is worth hearing / learning.

Of course, you always want to listen to and be under the care of your dentist.  But, that doesn't mean a person can't learn things that can help her further, right?   You should always get your regular cleanings and checkups.   That's important.   But, even most dental professionals will acknowledge that what you do at home, every day, and between office visits, has the greatest impact on your dental health.

Sincerely,

What Do You Think About Fluoride Comment 2

Thanks to the Holiday311 for his comment about Fluoride.  As I mentioned in the video, the pro-fluoride side seems to be missing from this public forum.   If you are pro-fluoride, this is your opportunity to step up to the plate.

I would save that peaceful, well thought out and logical explanations to any viewpoint are the best way to proceed.   However,  is is perfectly acceptable to simply say " I am for it" or "I am against".
There is not minimum word count qualify.

Having said that, I think it would be great to also hear more of from the 'against' side as well.  So, regardless of which side of the fence you are on,  your comments will be welcome.  Only hate posts will be removed.

If you have some insight into fluoridation of water in drinking supplies, please do feel free to share that information.

As the moderator of the page, I have to stress that I am requiring myself to take a neutral stance.  I do have thoughts on this topic, but since I am moderating, I don't have the right to share them in this forum.

About My Interview With Fancy Scrubs - Video Commentary

If you feel so inclined, it would be great to read the interview via the link above and then leave a comment or two there so that I can respond.

I want to thank Ken and Lisa at FancyScrubs.com for giving me the opportunity to share what I do and why ToothyGrinsStore.com exists.

I certainly hope that more people will learn about the widespread nature of gum disease and start to take action now before they are faced with costly tooth replacements and surgeries.   It would be unwise to assume that you are safe because dental professionals tell us that about 75% of people have some gum disease.

FancyScrubs.com carries a full line of medical and dental scrubs.  If you get a chance to check out their site I think you will be pleased to see the stylish and functional scrubs that exist there.

Dental Offices and Professionals May List Their Information On This Site For Free

If you are a dental office or a dental health professional that would like to list yourself or your services on this site at no charge, give me a call at 1-888-586-6849.

There is no charge for listing here.  But, I do want to talk to you on the telephone at least.   Don't worry, the goal is to have a pleasant conversation, not to grill you with 50 questions.

So, this is a good opportunity for you to get a free listing and a free link to your site.  If you are involved in other aspects of the dental health industry, there may also be an opportunity here as well.

The Smiley Dental Clinic Pays Back State of Texas Medicaid 4 Million

I found an article about this story here.

The pay back deal apparently allowed The Smiley Dental Clinic to pay without admitting to any wrongdoing.

This may be a new and interesting trend in which state Medicaid systems begin to get paid back on some of the 'questionable' charges to the system out there.    The article mentions that other clinics are paying back as well.

Meanwhile

In the meantime, there are plenty of people in the US that can't get the quality dental care they need due to lack of funds.   It is sad to hear about possible abuses to the system when there are so many that go without needed dental care.

I don't think the right answer is for States or even Medicaid to pay for everything either.  That burden would just fall on the tax payer.  It would add to the problems that already exist!

So, what is the right answer to this problem?   You tell me, how can more people have access to the dental care they need without burdening tax payers further?     Any answers?

 Sincerely,

Clay Center Family Dental Care in Clay Center, Kansas Gives A Day Of Free Care!

I love stories like this one, found in wibw.com's website

This is great.   I really enjoy hearing about stories like this one.

Dr.  Rick Hammel, said that his eyes were opened while doing volunteer work in Belize.  Some patients there were up night after night suffering from dental pain.

This made him aware of the suffering of those outside his socio-economic status.  Now he wishes to give back to the community with a day of free dental care for those in need.

Tomorrow is the day.  That will be April 19th 2013.

I congratulate Dr. Hammel for doing this work.

It is sad that so many people, even in the US, go without adequate dental care for lack of funds.   So, it is great that you, Dr. Hammel,  are making a difference!

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hammel.

Free Dental Health Service For Pregenant Women And Infants In Dundalk, Maryland.

Just found an article on an ABC news affiliated website

Looks like there is free dental care today in Dundalk, Maryland.  Sounds like it is for today only.  If you  know anyone in that area, you might want to let them know.

It appears to be sponsored by the Community College of Baltimore County.

You can check the above link for times and the exact address.

So Many Undeserved Populations in the US

There are just too many people who don't have dental health insurance in the US!   Unfortunately, many people try to avoid going to the dentist as a result of not having coverage.

They either fear the expense or the pain or both.

That's bad because regular dental cleanings could make a big difference.  Perhaps one of the biggest threats to people is losing teeth over gum disease.

I hope we can figure out a way to get more people regular cleanings and checkups in the US.

Sincerely,

Irish Gum Disease Pamphlet Revealed

I came across this pamphlet on gum disease from Ireland.

Here are some interesting differences:

In the Irish 'leaflet' (which is what they refer to it as) they say that gum disease afflicts about 4 out of every 5 people worldwide.     That's about 80%.

In the United States you hear various numbers with 3 out of every 4 or about 75% being the most common statement.

In either case, and regardless of which statistic is more accurate, gum disease is a serious threat to both dental health and the body's health.  So many people have gum disease and don't know it, that it is truly a shame.

If you asked most people, they would say they don't have gum disease.  Yet, in Ireland dental professionals are saying 80% of people do!    In the US, it is commonly stated as somewhere between 40 and 75% - most commonly 75%.

It makes no difference if it is 4 out of every 5 or 3 out of every 4 people - it is a LOT of people.  Even if it is as low as 40% or 4 out of every 10 people, that is still a lot!

If you are reading this, I hope you are inspired to learn more about gum disease.   Read about how it is  threat to your health and  your family's health.   Learn everything you can about preventing it or mitigating it once you realize you have it.

Of course, I can only speak in general terms here.  Specific questions about your own unique situation should be addressed by your dentist.

This is such a serious problem and so many people have underestimated it.   Don't be one of them.

Connection Between Obesity And Periodontal Disease?

I found this brief but interesting article at the Newsfix.ca website

Apparently researchers at Case Western University have found a connection between the two problems.

They speculate that replacing milk and citrus drinks with soda is to blame.
Less calcium and vitamin c coupled with increased sugar and acid could be the connection.

Of course, this makes sense.  Many health oriented people have made their case against acid diets and acidity in general.    Of course, we know that calcium is important to health as well.

Perhaps one day there will be warning labels on every soda can and bottle, just like on packages of cigarrettes?

Drinking soda can kill you?    What are the odds we will ever see that on a soda can?

Periodontal Disease and Vitamin D

Article source : The Vitamin D Council?

A website called  The Vitamin D Council has posted an article about vitamin D's relationship to periodontal disease - which they refer to as PD.   :)

I thought the article raised a few interesting points.

They are not saying that sunlight exposure and vitamin d supplementation will reverse gum disease. And that is good because I am quite sure that neither would.    Once the bacterial population gets to a certain level - vitamins are not likely to stop them.

Instead they are pointing out that people with suspected lower levels of vitamin D are more at risk for contracting gum disease.   This may or may not be true.  I don't necessarily doubt it.   It is an interesting correlation to say the least.

Once you know you have gum disease, you should definitely take action and be under the care of skilled and caring periodontist.   A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in gum health and disease.
A good periodontist will work to help save your teeth.

Baton Rouge Veterinarian Warns of Rising Pet Dental Problems - Gum Disease

I read an article about 3 veterinarians

Dr. Sam Haase and fellow veterinarians Dr. Frederic Michaelson and Dr. Chris Hayes are running an Animal Hospital.   Dr. Haase states that according to recent estimates 3 out of every four cats AND dogs over three years old  have gum disease.

What I find interesting is that this is similar to the estimate for humans too!  Three out of four is 75% which is what many dental professionals believe is the number of people with at least some gum disease as well.

So, we have three different species with about the same incidence of gum disease?   Cats, dogs and humans all appear to have about the same incidence rate of gum disease!   That's very interesting to say the least.

If You Are A Human

Understanding gum disease, for humans, is very important to their health.  Researchers have found some type of connection, although they don't fully understand these connections, between gum disease and many other diseases in the body.

Actually, this is only modern confirmation of what ancient people intuitively understood!  Didn't (and don't they still today) farmers always check an animal's mouth before purchasing it?   Why is that?

They intuitively understood that an unhealthy mouth possibly or probably meant an unhealthy body.  Isn't that where the saying, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth", comes from?

Learn what you can to help to protect yourself and your family today.

HIV and Hepatits Testing For Oklahoma Oral Surgeon's Patients - Video Commentary

Link to the page depicted in the video

I really hope the patients turn out to be ok.  It sounds as though the office staff used improper sterilization techniques and reused drug bottles.   They even had a separate set of instruments for 'high risk' patients.

These instruments turned out to be rusty.  Protocol dictates that rusty instruments cannot be properly sterilized no matter what procedure is used.

This 'shortcuts' may have been used to save money or it may be that the staff really didn't know what they were doing.  The surgeon himself, when questioned by the board, stated that he left sterilization procedures up to his staff.

Some staff members were not qualified to administer sedation IVs but were doing so anyway.

I hope everyone will check out ok.

Experts say that cases such as this one are rare.  But, can we ever be 100% sure?  There are no guarantees in life.

I do think they did a  good job answering this question.   If you have interesting commentary to add, let us know.

We should not overlook, nor forget about prevention.  Many expensive dental procedures could be avoided in the first place, if patient's were more educated about prevention.   My favorite.

April - National Facial Protection Month - According to the ADA

The ADA has an article on their site dubbing April as National Facial Protection Month

Some of the items they mention in their article is that a mouth guard is not required equipment in many school and recreational sports around the nation.

In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists survey suggests that 84% of children playing organized sports do NOT wear mouthguards.

It is definitely an important aspect of protection to raise awareness by.

Many people lose teeth due to accidents and injuries.

While I certainly do support the ADA's declaration of Facial Protection Month  - more awareness is needed in multiple areas.

Not The Biggest Cause Of Tooth Loss

The biggest cause of tooth loss, bar none, is actually gum disease.  That means that more people will lose one or more teeth to gum disease more often than to injuries and accidents.

I am not downplaying the potential for sports injuries to cause serious damage to faces, jaws and teeth.  But I am saying that more people this year will lose teeth to gum disease than any other cause.

Understanding gum disease is the first step.

Many people just do not understand this threat to their dental health.   Most dental professionals believe that about 3 out of every 4 or 75% of people have some gum disease right now!

Yet, most have no idea that they do.   They often are not told about the problem until it is time for a relatively expensive treatment.

More often than not, it is up to the consumer / patient to understand prevention and make sure that adequate prevention steps are taken.

The problem lies in the fact that fighting / preventing gum disease is a daily battle and you only get to see your dentist a handful of times per year at most.  They cannot fight the daily battles for you.  It is something that each one of us need to do for ourselves.

Read more about my favorite dental health prevention tool now.
