Spread of Hepatitis C From Dental Office Confirmed

I was reading that they did find evidence that a dental office in  Tulsa Oklahoma did indeed spread Hepatitis C to on at least one instance

dental office infects at least one patient with hep C
This is the first time this has been noted to have happened at a dental clinic.  But whether it is actually the first time or not is debatable.   There are so many ways for microbes to find their way from one person to another that it is very conceivable that this isn't the 'first time'.   It's only the first time they found evidence of it.

I previously wrote on this topic here.

You can more from the AP here.

If you have ever taken a microbiology course with a lab, then you probably know quite well how many microorganisms are all around us.  Some are benign, some are infectious.

Your health depends on a strong and working immune system.  Never forget about your body's natural defenses.   Don't let your body run down.   The body has amazing powers but it needs to be healthy, rested, hydrated and in relatively good shape to keep a healthy immune response going.

At any rate. It is indeed sad to hear about this.

Even so,  this is probably not the 'first time' something like this has happened.

If you are in the medical or dental field, it is important to follow all protocols for sterilization as you already know.   This particular office is notable for letting all kinds of things go wrong.

And this is why he will be in some trouble as a result.   Patient safety HAS to be a priority.  With the stronger and more resistant strains of microbes showing up, you might even think it is dangerous to stay at a hospital.

Message:  Professionals, maintain vigilance in protocol.   Patients, keep your body as healthy as you can.  Having a strong immunity can help to somewhat protect you when accidentally exposed to something nasty.

Dentist Pulls The Wrong Teeth

I found an article that talks about how a dentist is being sued for pulling the wrong tooth on a 4 year old boy

 Scary,  isn't it?

You can read the full story here.

In this case, it appears that the patient was only 4 years old.   It also seems that he has some longer term problems as a result.

You might think, 4 years old?   He's going to grow new teeth anyway.    True enough.  But it appears that there were additional problems to consider.

I don't know how you view this.  Are the people lawsuite happy, seeking their opportunity?  Or was this dentist truly, intentionally negligent?

It's got to be tough to hold your head up in the community you serve when the news gets out.   I don't know what the reality is here with this situation.

But, it does sound like there are no winners here.  The boy is suffering and the dentist is suffering.

It's a tough world.

Greetings From Toothy Grins Store!

When I first wrote the book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease - I was hoping to inform more people about the dental health issues and truths that I had come to understand.     I have been able to do that.   And I hope to educate more people as well.

Since we all know the most powerful and effective tool is the Hydro Floss,  here are some helpful links.

1.  How To Use Your Hydro Floss Effectively

2. The original directions that came with your Hydro Floss (that you may have lost - but would love to have again)

Of course, we have the Hydro Floss in stock right now.    We also have many parts that you can find at ToothyGrinsStore.com

It would be great if more dental offices would send their patients directly to ToothyGrinsStore.com  It saves the hassle of stocking and customer service.   We can provide that for them - as you know.

Thank you again for being a customer.

Sincerely,
David Snape

Oklahoma Oral Surgeon's Patients Sent Warning About Possible HIV or Other Infections

I read this article in the Seattle Times

Inspector's found improper procedures, improper sterilization protocols, rusty instruments and staff not authorized to administer sedation IVs, among other problems at an Oral Surgeon's Office in Oklahoma.

Frightening!

Letter's were sent out to about 7,000 patients urging them to be tested for HIV.

Please Be Careful

If you are a dental health professional, please be ever so careful about these 'little details'.  It is not fair to your patients to use rusted instruments, improper sterilization protocols or to reuse drug vials.

Patients deserve the best care.   I am sure they are paying for the best.

I do not know what to say about this type of thing.  It is horrible.  I hope that it doesn't happen very often as one expert suggested.

Patient Safety Should Come First.

--------

And don't forget about prevention as well.  Many expensive dental procedures could be avoided in the first place, if patient's were more educated about prevention.   My favorite.

Conflicts Of Interest Found In Dental Research

Story found at MedScape

I honestly think this is no surprise at all.   The problem is always the question of "Who's funding the research?".

Private companies found out a long time ago they could get researchers to say things that - well frankly might be 'questionable' to their non-influenced peers.   But, over the years, this has continued.

And it will likely continue from here.   We can make laws and I am quite sure there are many in place.  The problem is one of the heart.   People can and will be influenced by money.

You could make it so that only the government would be able to dole out research dollars.  But that would increase costs to the taxpayers and government agencies have often been accused of being influenced by the private sector as well.

So, if there is a solution to this potential problem, it might have to be a rather complicated one.  And in the end, there may not be a 'truly workable solution' to this problem.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where people don't necessarily police their own actions.   So, unless that changes, we are unlikely to see a change in the 'reality' of our world.

It's important that people always ask the question: "Where did the money come from."   The reason is to be aware of possible influences.

Researchers live in a political world as well.  If they take their research in a 'politically incorrect' direction, they risk being blacklisted and cut off from future funding.  This is a scary proposition for a researcher!

Many researchers simply look at what these power groups and influencers want and then custom tailor a research project that might lead to the desired results.   This is how many researchers continue to fund their research.

It is sad, and it is unlikely to change.   Any thoughts?  Please  share them in the comments below.

Bill To Upgrade Hygienists' Licensure in The State of Main

Here is the story link to Press Herald

This is a very interesting development.  The article says there is a shortage in 15 counties in Maine and that 55% of children lack access to dental care.

Wow, that's a shocker.  No wonder they want to do something about that.   If you are a dental hygienist, this might be a good time to consider relocation.

I wish the story specified exactly what the newly empowered hygienists' scope of work will be.  But there was no mention of that.   It is also doesn't tell us if there will be additional training offered to those hygienists.

The bill is being sponsored by Mark Eves (House Speaker)  and Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio ( a former dental hygienist)

I wonder what it is about Maine that they have a shortage of dentists?   If you understand the situation and have commentary, please provide it in the comment section below.

Tulsa Periodontist Uses FDA Approved Laser Treatments

Dr. Randy McCormick - A Tulsa, Oklahoma Dentist Now Treats Periodontal Disease With FDA Cleared Laser

Dr. McCormick is now using the LANAP procedure to treat patients with periodontal disease.

We congratulate Dr. McCormick on helping patients with gum disease.

The article mentions that over 40% of people over the age of 65 and up will have lost or will lose 6 or more teeth to gum disease.   Ouch...   Time to focus on prevention?

Gum disease does not wait until you are 65 however, it can strike  at any age.   It is just that you see more of the accumulated damage when you are older.   A little prevention now can save a boat load of cash in the future - not to mention time, pain and suffering as well!

Hopefully, Doctor Randy is educating those same patients about the Hydro Floss for their home care as well!

Charter Oak Unified students receive free dental care

I found this story at SGVTribune online

I think it is great that dental professionals teamed up to bring dental care to these children who did not have access to health insurance.  It is always heartwarming to hear stories of those who are willing to devote their time for a good cause.

Bravo to the Dental professionals of Covina, California for providing these services.

If you know of such an event, please let me know so that I can post it to this blog.

The Dental Assistant Who Could - Marnae's Story and Midwest Dental Office Solutions

Here’s how it all happened

In 2000 I returned home from college. I decided that I would snag a job at a local pancake house.

Unknowingly, I wouldn’t work there long. A few months into my new found career, I met a dentist.

He came in for lunch and offered me a proposition that would forever change my life. He said “I know this is creepy, you have beautiful teeth, I’m opening a dental practice, and I need an assistant, Saturday!” With the most confused look on my face I thought about it for a few seconds, shrugged my shoulders, and said “Heck, What do I have to lose?”

I had never considered becoming a dental assistant. I never knew there was such a thing! I meet with him that Saturday. He offered me the position and from then on I was a proud Dental Assistant. I studied under him for close to 2 years.

I then moved on to several offices, joined dental communities, took countless dental related courses, etc. I eventually became one of the best assistants in my industry. I had job offers flowing in that I never even asked for.I had Doctors and dental practices that I’d met over the years requesting me to train other assistants.

I eventually clawed my way to the top of my food chain. Practices could no longer afford me. Knowing that if I was to continue my career as a dental assistant, I would have to become complacent with my life as it was.

Well needless to say, I like to keep moving full steam ahead. I eventually decided to be my own boss.

Since I love dentistry so much I knew that I did not want to leave the field. I also did not want to be a dental hygienist, nor a dentist. So I asked myself “where do I fit in”?

I love telling my story. I also want to empower and encourage other dental professionals. Along came Midwest Dental Office Solutions Inc.

I knew that I wanted to help other dental professional find their place in the industry. On January 1, 2013 I launched Midwest Dental Solutions, a temporary and permanent employment staffing agency.

At Midwest Dental Office Solutions we provide temporary and permanent dental practice staffing to fit today dentists.

Each team member is experienced and/or licensed to practices in their respected fields. Our goal is to assist each dental practice with continuing the tradition of excellent patient care.

Today Midwest Dental Office Solutions is a fully functioning agency. We operate from the greater Chicagoland area.

We are so excited about our new adventures in the dental world.  I know that the sky is the limit for me and this company.  I invite you to join me on this great journey!

 Love, Hugs, and Kisses, Marnae’

Oral B Pro Care 1000

We just added The Oral B Professional Care 1000 Electric Toothbrush to Toothy Grins Store

I also found out direct from Oral B today that this toothbrush is also know as "Precision Care 1000"  and  "HealthyCare 1000"

The purpose of any toothbrush, manual or electric is to help us disrupt plaque.  Plaque is the enemy.

Some studies have shown that an electric is better at disrupting plaque than a manual toothbrush.  I think a lot depends on how well you use it.

It is nice to have a timer that tells you when the 2 minutes is up.  Most people, when using a manual, lose track of time.  30 seconds seems like 2 minutes to them.   So, they don't even do the amount recommended by their dentist - but they think they do!

A timer is one of the benefits of an electric.

The only part that worries me a little is the possibility of too much action against the gums.  You can lessen that by using a very light touch.  Aside from gum disease, brushing too hard with a toothbrush is a cause of gum erosion / recession.

The key takeaway is that plaque is very easy to disrupt.   So there is no need to brush hard.   On the other hand, consistency is also the key.   Plaque needs to be disrupted at least once every 24 hours.  But that does NOT mean you can brush once -per -day.  Brush the amount and way that your dentist or hygienist suggests.

An electric toothbrush can be a great asset.  My periodontist also recommends the Oral B brand.   And I think he really knows what he is talking about!   :)

One of my favorite tools for dental health improvement, however, remains this oral irrigator.

Sincerely,
