What Is The Biggest Threat To Your Dental Health?

Arguably, the biggest threat to your dental health is gum disease.   A number of factors may go into your diagnosis of this problem, but one of the most objective factors is your periodontal pocket depths.

They should be 3mm and below.  If you have pockets greater than 3mm, generally speaking, most dental professionals will say that your gums are unhealthy.

If this is the case for you, don't be too shocked.  In fact, about 75% of people have some gum disease right now.  However, that is NOT a reason to take it lightly.  In fact, just the opposite.

So many health problems, according to researchers, seem to bear a (mostly) unexplained correlation to the presence of gum disease.

There are many theories for this.  One is that the bacteria that cause gum disease and other dental health problems have easy access to your blood stream.  The tissues are thin in your mouth and access to your blood is not far away.

This may explain why p gingivalis ( a gum disease causing bacteria) is being found in the plaque that clogs arterial vessels in heart disease victims.   I don't know about you, but to me the implications are a bit scary.

As if that weren't enough, gum disease is the number one reason that people lose their teeth.  That has probably been the case for thousands of years on this planet.

It's not much different today.  This is a common problem that takes people's teeth ruins smiles and may cause other health problems!   Yet, the majority of people remain ignorant of these facts.

Don't be one of them.   Learn what you can do to help protect your dental health and improve your chances of beating the odds!

Today's Research Simply Validates Ancient Wisdom

When you think about it, these correlations that are being discovered should not be all that surprising. Farmers and those who have owned livestock throughout the centuries mostly noticed that their animals health is related to their mouth.

That's why many livestock owners have always checked the mouth of an animal before buying it.  They have known all along that the mouth reflects the health of the body.

What About Those Periodontal Pocket Depths?

No one can guarantee that that one thing will work for everyone.  But I can tell you the one thing that has worked for me and the vast majority of my customers I have discussed this with.  That is the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator and you can read the customer reviews for yourself.

Sincerely,

Why Acid Is Bad For Your Teeth

Logic:    'Bad' bacteria multiply faster when there is an acidic environment.   Then they create more bacteria that secrete even more acid.  This creates a self perpetuating loop.  - Unless you stop it.

Second - Acidic foods and drinks (like coffee)  can directly harm your tooth enamel.  This can potentially leave you open to cavities.

Bad bacteria have a lot to do with gum disease, cavities and bad breath.

What About Those Mercury Amalgams?

This email came from a customer today (April 22, 2013):

"Our family is focusing on amalgams right now (mercury), although gum disease is effectively being addressed.  You might mention oil pulling and the use of a tooth pick around the gum as additional actions in addition to using your oral irrigator just fwiw."

My Answer (modified) :

Please keep in mind that every time you remove a filling to replace it with a new one, the hole is made bigger.  You can only do that so many times until you have to get a crown or worse.

Also, understand that most of the mercury is gone in 5 years.  So if it is longer than 5 years and you are thinking of replacing them, keep in mind the point above.

Fillings do not last forever.  Every time they need to 'replace' one, they have to make the hole even bigger.   You can only go so far with that.

The use of a tooth pick around the gumline is a great idea. you can get a tool called a perio-aid to help you with that.  Most periodontists give them away for free.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic  fillings are not without problems either.   I think a person should do their research.  It appears that these ceramic fillings, for one thing, change the natural electrical charge that the tooth has.

While that may or may not mean anything in reality,  no one is really shore what the effects of this charge could be in the long run.    (if any).

There may be other cons to ceramics as well.

I'm certainly not saying you should choose mercury either.    I'm just pointing out that one should probably research the pros and cons before getting all of your fillings redone.

Feel free to comment.

Sincerely,

Trying To Give Up Coffee - Like Me?

You bet I'm trying to give up coffee and I've gone about 1 1/2 weeks without it.    Looks like I motivated myself partially with this post on coffee.

The other part of the motivation came from an upcoming dental appointment.  I wanted to give my teeth a chance to heal any holes (beginning of cavities) that might have been brewing.

You don't want to give a dentist the excuse to drill and fill.  Some will not do so easily, but others will!  (That's a tip regarding how to find a good dentist -btw).

So, anyway, I must of had enough time to reverse any acid damage that had been occurring, because I didn't have any cavities on this recent trip.

I think a lot of that also has to do with the Hydro Floss which I use daily and does a lot to reduce the amount of plaque and tartar buildup between dental cleanings.

I know that coffee is a mainstream drink and some people drink it all day long.   For this reason, I suggest balancing your mouth pH after drinking every cup!

Dental health is elusive for a lot of people.  Acid helps cavities, bad breath and gum disease develop.

The strange aspect of this is that the 'bad' bacteria love acid.  It also ends up being a byproduct of their anaerobic metabolism.   That's a fancy way of saying their waste is acidic.   The bacteria that use aerobic metabolism are usually not harmful to our dental health.

Since increasing the acid levels (and decreasing) pH helps that bad bacteria multiply more rapidly, it follows that raising the pH would be something they would not like.

Not many mouthwashes are pH balanced but this one is.

Sincerely,

Irish Gum Disease Pamphlet Revealed

I came across this pamphlet on gum disease from Ireland.

Here are some interesting differences:

In the Irish 'leaflet' (which is what they refer to it as) they say that gum disease afflicts about 4 out of every 5 people worldwide.     That's about 80%.

In the United States you hear various numbers with 3 out of every 4 or about 75% being the most common statement.

In either case, and regardless of which statistic is more accurate, gum disease is a serious threat to both dental health and the body's health.  So many people have gum disease and don't know it, that it is truly a shame.

If you asked most people, they would say they don't have gum disease.  Yet, in Ireland dental professionals are saying 80% of people do!    In the US, it is commonly stated as somewhere between 40 and 75% - most commonly 75%.

It makes no difference if it is 4 out of every 5 or 3 out of every 4 people - it is a LOT of people.  Even if it is as low as 40% or 4 out of every 10 people, that is still a lot!

If you are reading this, I hope you are inspired to learn more about gum disease.   Read about how it is  threat to your health and  your family's health.   Learn everything you can about preventing it or mitigating it once you realize you have it.

Of course, I can only speak in general terms here.  Specific questions about your own unique situation should be addressed by your dentist.

This is such a serious problem and so many people have underestimated it.   Don't be one of them.

Why Dry Mouth Is A Real Problem For Your Dental Health

dry mouth formula

Dry mouth is a threat to your dental health.  The reasons are relatively simple.

You mouth uses saliva to retard bacteria populations.   In addition, dried out tissues are much more susceptible to bacterial growth.

For these reasons, you should not take dry mouth lightly.

Bacteria

The so called 'bad bacteria' are responsible for many dental health problems such as gum disease, cavities and bad breath.

Medications

Many medications are the source of dry mouth as it is a side effect of quite a few.  The best person to ask about this is your pharmacist.

You can always ask your doctor if there is a replacement medicine that would be better suited for you.

Of course, that may not always be possible.  Only your doctor will be able to tell you.

I speak in general terms only here. For specific questions about your own unique situation be sure to ask your doctor or dentist.

Baton Rouge Veterinarian Warns of Rising Pet Dental Problems - Gum Disease

I read an article about 3 veterinarians

Dr. Sam Haase and fellow veterinarians Dr. Frederic Michaelson and Dr. Chris Hayes are running an Animal Hospital.   Dr. Haase states that according to recent estimates 3 out of every four cats AND dogs over three years old  have gum disease.

What I find interesting is that this is similar to the estimate for humans too!  Three out of four is 75% which is what many dental professionals believe is the number of people with at least some gum disease as well.

So, we have three different species with about the same incidence of gum disease?   Cats, dogs and humans all appear to have about the same incidence rate of gum disease!   That's very interesting to say the least.

If You Are A Human

Understanding gum disease, for humans, is very important to their health.  Researchers have found some type of connection, although they don't fully understand these connections, between gum disease and many other diseases in the body.

Actually, this is only modern confirmation of what ancient people intuitively understood!  Didn't (and don't they still today) farmers always check an animal's mouth before purchasing it?   Why is that?

They intuitively understood that an unhealthy mouth possibly or probably meant an unhealthy body.  Isn't that where the saying, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth", comes from?

Learn what you can to help to protect yourself and your family today.

Tooth Decay Is On The Rise In Preschoolers

I found an article about tooth decay in preschoolers here.

On the surface, this premise sounds like this is a 'new' phenomenon.  But, I suspect that this has been the case for quite a long time.   Juices and milk are full of sugars and we all know that sugar will feed tooth decay causing bacteria.

These bacteria then produce acidic waste byproducts.  These acids are what cause the creation of cavities.   More sugar leads to more bacterial growth and so forth and so on.

A Tip

Here is an idea.  Try getting xylitol tooth gel and rubbing it on the children's teeth at night.  Xylitol is also a sugar, but it is one that the bacteria cannot use.  They end up starving and dying.  These gels can sometimes be found in health food stores.   Read the label directions carefully before use.

Toothy Decay Problem

It's not a surprise that tooth problems are 'on the rise'.  They have been rampant' for a long time and not just in children either.  Consider how large the dental health industry is.   That should tell you all you need to know.

Tooth decay and other dental health problems occur frequently.  People are always being treated for them.   The treatment of dental disease must be a multi-billion dollar industry.   I guess that it could possibly be a trillion dollar industry.

It is frightening when you think about it.   Focusing on prevention is the best way to try and protect yourself and your family.  Knowledge is power.

This is my dental health prevention message for the day!

Ötzi The Iceman Could Have Used a Dentist - He Had Gum Disease Too

I read an article from Science NBC News     ---  (Article was pointed out to me by one Ekhym Wethered of Overland Park, KS - Thanks Ekhym!)

Looks like our 5,000 year old well preserved ice man lived a decent life (until he was shot with an arrow that is) but had some bad dental problems.

One item in particular that piqued my interest was that Ötzi had gum disease.   The article went on to mention that Ötzi probably would have lost some teeth within the next five years - had he continued living.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.  Although Ötzi can also attribute his problems to a milled grain diet (such as worn teeth). It is common knowledge today that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

Some people lose one or more teeth get implants or dentures and somehow missed the whole point that their tooth loss was due to gum disease!  They still don't know it.

Too bad they didn't visit Toothy Grins Store because we talk about this topic a lot.   Of course, back in Ötzi's day Toothy Grins Store didn't exist.  But fortunately for modern man, it does!

Don't suffer the same fate as our neolithic ice man!  Make and keep your gums healthy!
