Chewing Tobacco Warning

A follower on twitter sent me a picture of the bottom of a certain chewing tobacco brand's box:

The warning says:   Warning:  This Product Can Cause Gum Disease and Tooth Loss

I thought that was a cool picture.   I won't post it here because I'm sure all the brands are required to do the same thing.   I am not interested in picking on one brand.

Clearly, the entire industry was required by law to post those warnings.  They sure wouldn't do it voluntarily.

Instead, I'm interested in spreading the word about preventing and stopping gum disease.   Most people have some anyway, whether they know it or not.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

There are things you can do to prevent it and arrest its progress and there are things you can do to make it worse - as the above example shows.

The vast majority of tooth loss in the world is due to gum disease.

Gum disease causes tooth loss.

Shouldn't you learn more about this problem?   If most people have it - 3 out of every 4 according to many dental professionals, shouldn't you be learning what you can do to reduce or stop it?

What do you think?  Let's start a dialog on this.

Sincerely,

Essential Oil Blend of Almond, Spearmint and Peppermint - Good For Your Dental Health?

Well, according to this site,   that blend is good for your dental health.   You can read their testimonials and information there.

While, I do think essential oils can kill bacteria.   I think need for mechanical disruption on a daily basis is more important.

Therefore, these oils are an aid, but NOT a cure-all.   Please be careful with that.

If you don't believe me, you can ask a periodontist.  I think you will get a good solid answer there.

The Journal of Clinical Periodontology is the professional journal that many periodontists read.

There is one machine that was studied and written about twice in this journal for its ability to reduce plaque and tartar build up between office visits.  You can read about this home use machine here.

What Foods Help To Fight Gum Disease?

I've read a lot of posts on this topic.   I want to stress right up front that it would be unwise to think that you could possibly stop gum disease via diet alone.   Although, dietary changes could certainly help.

The reason I say that is as follows:  With gum disease, the bacteria have already made significant progress.  Diet may help in some regards to limit their growth, but it is unlikely to stop problem of gum disease by itself.

They key to stopping gum disease is the daily manual disruption of plaque.   The bacteria will rapidly proliferate if the plaque layer is left in tact for any length of time.

Foods that can be helpful include any vegetable with lots of cellulose (it naturally helps to clean teeth)  Carrots, celery, peas etc.

Eating quality lean meat can help provide zinc and coenzyme Q-10 - both support the gum (periodontal) tissue.

Yogurt  - yogurt contains healthy bacteria, not the kind that causes gum disease.  Japanese research has shown the preventive power of yogurt.   The benefit is in replacing the 'bad bacteria' with a strong colony of good bacteria.   This is basically probiotics for the mouth.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid

Coffee, soda and other acidic beverages  - the 'bad bacteria' love acid.  It makes them multiply faster.  If you are suffering from gum disease, you don't want to add to this problem.

Tips

1. Be under the care of a good periodontist.   They may recommend more frequent cleanings such as 3 or 4 times per year instead of only twice.  This has been shown to be helpful to a lot of people.

2.  Brush and floss 2 or more times per day or at the frequency suggested by your periodontist.

3. You will probably want to look into additional plaque disrupting tools and techniques  such as the Perio-Aid and the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator (I highly recommend this and we do sell it here on this site).

4.  Read The books:  What You Should Know About Gum Disease : A Layman's Guide to Fighting Gum Disease   and  How To Stop Gum Disease In 4 Easy Steps  - disclaimer, I wrote them both.

Readers' Praise For The Book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease

You can get this book here at Toothy Grins Store,   at Therabreath  at Amazon.
It can also be found at B & N and many other online bookstores.   Garrison Keillor also has it on his site.

Readers' Praise
I love this book. It is a great resource for those interested in improving or achieving periodontal health.
—Stan Wint, DDS Periodontist

David speaks for thousands of compliant patients who visit dental professionals regularly. These people follow directions, use recom- mended products yet never reach the conclusion of their treat- ment plan. Is oral health beyond control? Is damage caused by insufficient care? David shines a bright light on these concerns. Read, enjoy and start to question authority!
—Ellie Phillips, DDS

David Snape saves!!! He may save teeth, money, time, and pain, but most importantly, he may save lives. Now that links have been established between the infection of chronic periodontal disease and many systemic illnesses like Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke and Low-weight pre-term birth his words are invaluable! Dave's new guide, "WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GUM DISEASE" is a great layman's handbook about how to care for your teeth and gums. He has thoroughly researched gum disease and has written an easy to read guide for people to help themselves, yet gives bal- ance to the need for professional care. This book is a must read for people who are afraid to go to the dentist, people in underserved areas or those who just can't afford professional dental services. Dave makes the reader aware of the signs of gum disease and what they can do to help themselves.

This book should be in dentist and doctor's office waiting areas and health clinics for the poor and working poor. He is respectful to the importance of Dentists and Hygienists in their role in help- ing people achieve good oral and systemic health, but also helps inform the public how to be better patients! Definitely a valuable book to have handy on everyone's bookshelf!

—Hillary Yasmer Shemin, RDH, BSDH Marquette University Class of 1974, Holland, PA

David Snape really gets it. Only you, the individual, can keep your- self from slipping through the many cracks in our well-meaning, but overly generic health care system. Perhaps not glamorous enough to command constant media coverage, Periodontal Disease, nonetheless has far-reaching health implications for every individual, affecting both quality of life and longevity.
Drawing from his own in-depth experience and knowledge on the subject, Snape enables his reader to go easily beyond the minimal preventive care offered to most Americans. The results will empower his readers to take charge of this vital, yet often-ignored aspect of good health and wellbeing. I only wish I had this book twenty years (and several lost teeth) ago.
—John Corso, MD, author of Stupid Reasons People Die

The book IS wonderful, and very informative! It's down to earth, in layperson language, and gives direction where one can begin searching for dental health and improving overall periodontal care.
—Dr. Tamerut Adams, D.O. Board Certified in Internal Medicine

3 Out Of Every 4 People Have Gum Disease

This is what many (or even most) dental professionals will typically tell you when you ask them.   They generally say 75% of people have some gum disease right now.

It doesn't really matter if you are talking about:

  1. Gum disease
  2. gingivitis
  3. periodontal disease
They are all different stages of the same disease process.

That process can eventually lead to the loss of a tooth.   Severe gum recession may or may not occur before that point.

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

If you think this is serious and even dangerous, you might be right.   Why lose a tooth if you don't have to.

They say that knowledge is power.

What Is The Biggest Threat To Your Dental Health?

Arguably, the biggest threat to your dental health is gum disease.   A number of factors may go into your diagnosis of this problem, but one of the most objective factors is your periodontal pocket depths.

They should be 3mm and below.  If you have pockets greater than 3mm, generally speaking, most dental professionals will say that your gums are unhealthy.

If this is the case for you, don't be too shocked.  In fact, about 75% of people have some gum disease right now.  However, that is NOT a reason to take it lightly.  In fact, just the opposite.

So many health problems, according to researchers, seem to bear a (mostly) unexplained correlation to the presence of gum disease.

There are many theories for this.  One is that the bacteria that cause gum disease and other dental health problems have easy access to your blood stream.  The tissues are thin in your mouth and access to your blood is not far away.

This may explain why p gingivalis ( a gum disease causing bacteria) is being found in the plaque that clogs arterial vessels in heart disease victims.   I don't know about you, but to me the implications are a bit scary.

As if that weren't enough, gum disease is the number one reason that people lose their teeth.  That has probably been the case for thousands of years on this planet.

It's not much different today.  This is a common problem that takes people's teeth ruins smiles and may cause other health problems!   Yet, the majority of people remain ignorant of these facts.

Don't be one of them.   Learn what you can do to help protect your dental health and improve your chances of beating the odds!

Today's Research Simply Validates Ancient Wisdom

When you think about it, these correlations that are being discovered should not be all that surprising. Farmers and those who have owned livestock throughout the centuries mostly noticed that their animals health is related to their mouth.

That's why many livestock owners have always checked the mouth of an animal before buying it.  They have known all along that the mouth reflects the health of the body.

What About Those Periodontal Pocket Depths?

No one can guarantee that that one thing will work for everyone.  But I can tell you the one thing that has worked for me and the vast majority of my customers I have discussed this with.  That is the Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator and you can read the customer reviews for yourself.

Autoimmune Diseases and Gum Disease Relationship

Please share any references you have on this topic in the comment section below.

I know that researchers have found many connections between gum disease and quite a number of other health problems.   While the connections are apparent and most professionals agree on the correlations, many have not been fully explained as of yet.

I had not heard of autoimmune diseases having a relationship to gum disease until yesterday.   Then I started to realize that many customers have told me that have had an autoimmune disease.

Yesterday, a customer called me to tell me that he had read about this connection.

As I mentioned before, I have heard of many other connections to gum disease.

If you have a real reference to any studies on this topic, please do share it in the comment section below.    That would be awesome and will quite possibly benefit others visiting this page.

Is Gum Disease A Risk Factor For Stroke?

I found an article on this topic from the washington times website

The article did not convince me entirely. Never-the-less, I do not think that the study described was the only one that pointed to a correlation between these two health problems.

So the list is rather large now of diseases that are somehow related to or correlate to gum disease.
Periodontal disease, periodontitis, and even gingivitis are all different stages or just different names for the same disease process.

It basically means there is enough of a 'bad bacteria' population that secretes  acidic toxins to begin or continue the desctruction of tissue around your teeth.   When this tissue destruction carries on too far, the teeth will become loose and fall.

Stopping this process or preventing it, should be a priority for the majority of people on this planet.  Estimates vary, but many professionals suggest that a very large segment of people have some gum disease right now.  Many just do not know they have it.

That is a shame, since gum disease happens to be the number one cause for people losing teeth.  Unfortunately, many people will not become aware of it until a tooth is loose or it is time for an expensive treatment to try and prevent further damage.

Not everyone on this planet will escape the clutches of gum disease.  But, wouldn't it be great if you were one of the lucky ones who figured it out and where able to avoid the ravages of this problem?

Sincerely,

Gum Disease Delays Pregnancy

Article on this topic from AFP via Google

So, aside from all the other nasty little things that gum disease is thought to be related to, it appears that delayed pregnancy is another.

It seems that every time we turn around that gum disease is related to something else.   Heart disease, stroke, low weight, pre-term babies, lung infections and other health problems appear to have some association with or to gum disease.

Yet, we can say that this isn't really new information!   The ancient people of the world had an intuitive understanding of this fact.   When they were going to purchase an animal or slave in days gone by, they would often look at the teeth.

They understood, even back then, that the health of the mouth was a reflection of the health of the body!   Therefore, modern confirmation of this should not be such a big surprise to anyone.

If You Want To Get Pregnant Sooner

Please pay attention to cleaning up that gum disease if possible.  Many people have gum disease and don't even know it.  So do not be surprised if you have it.

In addition, just being pregnant INCREASES your risk of having gum disease.    It is also not good for the baby as it has been determined to contribute to low birth weight and even premature delivery.

Gum disease is a real problem even when not pregnant.  Please pay close attention, not just for your sake but for the sake of those you love - or those you soon will...

Dr. Laura Tills From Madison Wisconsin is Offering Free Oral Cancer Screenings In April

I thought this story about Dr. Tills,  DDS and Dr. Mathew Kutz, DDS offering free oral cancer screenings was worthy of being talked about.   Here is the full story from prweb.

I think it is fantastic that they are doing this.   Oral cancer is obviously something serious and it is not something that most offices have the ability to screen for.

Therefore, an office that is offering free screenings - even if it is only for April 2013 is news worthy.
I'm delighted to hear of their work.

Of the many things that gum disease appears, according to researchers, to be related to, increased risk for oral cancer is one of them.

It's quite amazing when you consider the volume of research that shows a connection between gum disease and all kinds of other disease, isn't it?   It appears that a long term, chronic bacterial infection in the mouth (gum disease) leads to all kinds of more significant health problems.

The bacteria: p gingivalis has even been found in heart arterial plaque!   Wow.

Prevention is important.  And many dentists and hygienists are able to educate patients and help give them helpful tips, like using the HydroFloss at home, to help improve their periodontal health.  And for many people it is working!

Congrats to Doctors Tills and Kutz for offering free screening for oral cancer during the month of April 2013!

And don't forget about prevention as well.  Many expensive dental procedures could be avoided in the first place, if patient's were more educated about prevention.   My favorite.

Smoking Can Be Fatal - In German

Smoking Can Be Fatal In German is:  Rauchen kann tödlich sein

This is what is written on cigarette advertisements and cartons in Germany

Here is a video to give you an idea of the pronunciation:

Not only can smoking be fatal, it is not good for your dental health either!

Here is an excerpt from the book: What You Should Know About Gum Disease : A Layman's Guide to Fighting Gum Disease.

Smoking: It seems like there are plenty of good reasons to give up smoking. Here is yet another. Smoking is a contributing factor to the development of gum disease. This could be because of the smoke’s effect on the immune system or the direct effect of the smoke on gum tissue. Smoking dries out the mucous and saliva-producing tis- sues of the mouth, and smoke is also toxic in nature. Any of these reasons—and more—can be why smoking contributes to the progression of gum disease. It makes sense, right? Smoke is poison and poison harms the tissues of the body.

You can also find the book : What You Should Know About Gum Disease here.

If smoking is affecting your breath (of course it does) you might want to counter that with a little : French Kiss Chewing Gum.

If you haven't quite yet, I hope this helps to motivate you to 'make it happen'.   And if you love someone who hasn't quit yet,  you could send this page to them.

Dr. Randy McCormick - A Tulsa, Oklahoma Dentist Now Treats Periodontal Disease With FDA Cleared Laser

Dr. McCormick is now using the LANAP procedure to treat patients with periodontal disease.

We congratulate Dr. McCormick on helping patients with gum disease.

The article mentions that over 40% of people over the age of 65 and up will have lost or will lose 6 or more teeth to gum disease.   Ouch...   Time to focus on prevention?

Gum disease does not wait until you are 65 however, it can strike  at any age.   It is just that you see more of the accumulated damage when you are older.   A little prevention now can save a boat load of cash in the future - not to mention time, pain and suffering as well!

Hopefully, Doctor Randy is educating those same patients about the Hydro Floss for their home care as well!

Downey California Dentist, Michael C Duncker Now Offering LANAP Procedure To Patients

Dr.  Duncker is now offering LANAP treatment to his patients.

You can read the full story here.

Congratulations to Dr. Duncker on becoming certified to perform this procedure!

Hopefully Dr. Duncker fully supports prevention and his educating his patients so that they may never need this procedure done.

A good dentist will certainly report to his patients the depth of their periodontal pockets on every office visit.   This is a key indicator in the diagnosis of gum disease.

You will know when you are in danger with these numbers, so it is important that your hygienist or dentist tell you what these numbers are.  You don't want to be surprised by an expensive treatment, do you?

If you dentist's office is currently providing these numbers to you, be sure to ask them on every visit.  By staying on top of the problem of gum disease, you can avoid a lot of expensive hassles down the road.

The cost of dental surgery in the US, as I am sure you are probably aware or can guess, is quite high.  If you can manage to keep your gums healthy through prevention you can save yourself a lot of money over the remaining  decades / years of your life.

Cracked And Broken Teeth - Avoid Them!

Video:  Cracked and Broken Teeth - Avoid Them!  :

I actually made this video quite some time ago and it has amassed several thousand views.  When I listen to it, I realize that I did not filter out the "ums" and pauses etc.   If I were to make that video today, I probably would have.

Never-The-Less the message in the video is quite valid today.   It is a shame how  many people end up with problems because they don't have a grasp of some very basic concepts.

Check Mouth pH

In order to give yourself a better understanding of what is happening in your mouth, it would be cool if you could get your hands on some pH testing strips.   Your local pharmacy may or may not have them.  You might have to hunt around a bit, but they are out there.

Spit onto a small dish and use the pH strip to test your saliva.  Do NOT put the pH strips in your mouth - ever.   Then drink something acidic, like an energy drink or -gasp- a cup of coffee.   Afterwards, test your saliva's pH again.

Then, you can try the pH balancing mouthwash and see what effect it has.   You can try all kinds of different things, such as chewing xylitol gum, then you can see the effects on the mouth's pH.  Pretty soon, you will have a new awareness growing.

You mouth's saliva is designed to rebuild and strengthen your enamel.   But, if has a really hard time doing that in an acidic environment.

Lifestyle changes are hard to pull off. In other words, it is not likely that you are going to stop drinking coffee, soda, energy drinks, and other similar things.   Many foods are also acidic in the mouth, including those that people claim 'balance the pH of the body'.    When it is in the mouth, if it is acidic, it is a potential problem.
